I love SU's inkpads - I really do. All but that *&$@* "black" one! I don't understand why SU hasn't changed the formula for this one, because it is very, very purple! I almost ruined a Father's Day card last night because my "slightly" purple black inkpad decided to change into a VERY purple inkpad. A few months ago, someone very kindly stamped some images for me, and she must have used the same inkpad, because they are noticeably purple. I didn't have the heart to tell her that they look "off," because she went to all that trouble. I don't know if I'll be able to use them, though. I'll give it a try anyway.
I know a lot of people have had this same complaint, so please ignore this vent if you've heard it a million times before. ;)

I bought this ink pad that I really love. it is a giant one from Michael's. It reads on the top "Archival INk Jet Black. It is acid free fade resistant waterrpoof non-smear. They have it a brown and around 12.00..;)
I let my girls use mine...but I haven't touched it since I got a Memento Tuxedo Black and a Brilliance Graphite Black. They are BLACK with no purple tint at all!

I really dislike the SU black. I agree that it is purple, but I also don't think it's as waterproof as they claim it could be and I had some smearing issues when using markers with a stamped image stamped in that black. Years ago I purchased Ranger's Archival Jet Black dye based ink pad at AC Moore. It is a true black and is permanent, waterproof, smearproof and fade proof. I use it all the time and have never had any issues with it. I have had to re-ink it from time to time but the pad itself is still in great shape after 5 years.
If it's not something I want to emboss, I use Staz-On... It's sad that we have to buy so many black inkpads to find something that's a true black... and that doesn't stain our stamps too badly.

My SU black ink pad is definitely black but several people in my upline have ones that are definitely purple! I rarely use mine even though it is black, because I have others that I like better. I'll tell you this though, I'm afraid to buy a reinker from SU, for fear that it will be purple.

Thanks, ladies, for letting me vent and not flaming me. As I said, I really do love all of the other SU inkpads, and I think SU is a great company. That being said, I don't think I will ever buy another of their black inkpads again. I have a number of other black inkpads, including Palette, Ranger, Staz On, Brilliance, and Color Box. The wonderful thing about all of them is that they are actually BLACK. I guess I can always use my SU pad when I need a dark purple. Happy Stamping!

I also use the Archival Ink-Jet Black and by far it's the sharpest black I've ever used. I agree that the SU black is purple.
I agree! The Basic Black pad is very poor. Considering all that SU! has (stamps sets, coordinating papers, inks and markers, punches, etc.), you would think they would try to improve the most basic element of their program! I mean, who does NOT ever use a black ink pad! It's the FIRST thing I will reach for when I am stamping. BUT, I have given up on the SU! black pad and have switched to Memento Tuexdo Black for everything. I also like Versafine Onyx Black.
My SU! Basic Black pad has not been opened in YEARS!!!! And it is going to STAY THAT WAY!

I don't use SU Black, but I had a Adirondack Black Pitch that I didn't like at all. I love all their colors, but hated that one. It also had a purplish tint, so I decided to use it to my advantage. I added some purple reinker (quite a lot actually), and it gave me the richest, darkest purple I could want.

Brilliant! I LOVE IT! The old "lemonade from lemons" idea put into practice with fantastic results!

I'm a Demo and I won't use it for anything.. Mine are purple and they smear on the Whisper White card stock.. It takes forever for the ink to dry.. I won't recommend something I won't stand behind to my customers! I use the StazOn black when I'm demonstrating and for personal use I use Versafine.. Love that ink!! You would think with all the complaints they could come up with a solution.

What an awesome idea! I wish I had thought of that before I checked my SU black pad in the trash. I will keep that in mind for another black pad I have that is a purple though, thanks for sharing :-D
I never thought this to be true until my niece's daughter played with her black SU pad and basically cover both of her hands from the wrist to the tips of her little fingers. My niece took a picture of her hands and it looked like she was wearing dark purple gloves!
maybe i should have her send the pic to SU!
You know what's funny? I had used my small inkspot the other day, and that was the purple-looking one. My daughter used my regular black SU inkpad yesterday, and it looked black! I just don't get it. Oh, well, at least that one is OK for now.
I know you've probably called SU for answers, but if not, they said the only solution so far is to replace the pad itself because it is a mixture of 2 colors that make black and after a while it won't accept the re-inking any more. :( I'm with you in thinking they have to re-invent the solution they're using to one that stays black. SU is such a quality company that I would think they could do that for us. If other ink companies have a viable black, then they could, too!
I use Staz-on Jet Black (although I don't like the smell) b/c my SU pad is purple too . I like the versafine onyx black as well but I find it doesn't dry very fast on the SU! whisper white. I usually have to heat it. That said...I can use it to clear emboss which looks really cool...

Like you said, just venting!
Ummm... don't think "time" has anything to do with it, since mine have been purple since day 1. To make things worse, after the first one was purple I thought it was just a fluke, and bought ANOTHER one! Too bad I didn't read this thread earlier. It amazes me, because ALL of SU's other inks are great!
I thought I was the only one who had trouble with SU's black ink pad. I thought it was just my initial pad, then bought another and still had problems. I recently bought the Jet Black pad made by Archival Ink, and it's fabulous. What a difference, the images are so clean and dark, no smearing, dries quickly - perfect!
I am so sorry that your black ink pad is purple! My SU black in pad is the 'original' (older than dirt) version and is black and works great. Although, with coloring things in, I only use Memento Tuxedo Black. Love that ink pad! I rarely use the SU black any longer.
Great idea given to make your black/purple ink pad into a great dark purple!

Was in Michael's yesterday buying distress inks and saw this pad and almost bought it. I love my black Stazon, but the smell really gets to me sometimes. They had both the black and brown so will pick up both when I'm in there again. Thanks!

Actually...
I had problem with SU!'s Very Vanilla craft ink. It is just soooo runny and doesn't work like the Whisper White one does. I bought the re-inker but it didn't improve things. I finally gave it up and now I use PaperTrey's Vintage Cream ink instead.
I never had SU! Black, but have seen them be both purple and black, from friends' pads.

I have been using my SU black pad for a while and it is starting to be more purple. I had heard this has happened to other people, and I was planning to buy something else instead of trying to reink. The problem is that I have limited funds and I don't want to buy a bunch of pads to find which one I like. Right now I only have SU pads. I want something that can stand up to blender pens and watercoloring.
Scrapjanny - you have all kinds of pads. Why do you use the ones that you use (or maybe I should say "which one do you prefer and why")?
Or I would love to hear from anyone else who has tried several different brands and can tell me what their strengths and weaknesses are.
On a side note - I got an SU Basic Brown and it is way to runny. It leaks into it's container and also bleeds all over Whisper White cardstock or watercolor paper. I wish I had realized there was a problem right away, now it is too late to return it. I thought it was just me until I used someone else's. Other than that all my SU pads are great.

I really like Palette Noir and Memories Black. Both of them are made by the same company - Stewart Superior. They are waterproof and true Black. Weaknesses - they stain clear stamps pink, and you gotta get a stamp cleaner to clean them with (since they're waterproof - water or any water-based cleaner won't really get the stamps clean).
