Question Carla Craft Binding System

Anybody have this http://www.tayloredexpressions.com/c...ategory_id=123 ? What are your thoughts on it? What's the pitch on the coils (#/inch). Just wondering if it works with the Rubicoil coils. TIA!

This product just came out at the latest CHA in July so it's only just becoming available for purchase now. I found two links that seem to be about this product, and one of them says, "Compatible with all standard 1/4", 5/16", or 3/18" 19-Ring Plastic Binding Combs." The other (at Taylored Expressions) has a video on how to use it.

I saw the video, which is why I'm curious. Thanks for the compatibility info. I couldn't find that when I searched.

Default Coils are proprietary

I couldn't find details on the internet, so I called Carla Craft about this punch... I was told that it punches 3 holes per inch, so the coils purchased for the RubiCoil will NOT work with the Carla Craft. The man I spoke with said it was designed to work with just the Carla Craft coils. The capacity is 2 sheets of card stock at once; it will not punch chipboard or coasters.

Carla Craft coils are $4.95 for a package of three 9mm or 18mm coils... $1.65 per coil. Comparable spiral coils for the RubiCoil are 14 cents (10mm) to 27 cents (18mm) apiece in variety packs of 100, with four color choices.

The Carla Craft punch is made just like the palm-sized Rolodex punch. Like the old Rollabind hand punch, it is a small 2-inch punch that you insert into notches along a 12-inch plastic guide. It will punch 2 inches (6 holes) at a time, so to punch an 11-inch spine, you would punch 6 times, moving the punch into another notch on the guide between each punch. That's 12 separate steps for punching an 11-inch spine (which would be a single step with a RubiCoil). This might be fun and useful for tiny books, but seems inefficient for large books.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much! I'll stick with my big and bulky RubiCoil and the hundreds of coils I already have. I just hate it when I think I have my paper in properly only to punch on the edges. I'd better just practice more instead of seeing the greener grass on the other side! Guess I'm in the mood to spend some money. ;-)

Anne, I can give you a tip for avoiding that! Since the Rubi punches four holes to an inch, if your spine of the book is cut to even inches or half inches, you won't get a partial hole... you have to set the paper guide once, and then you can leave it in the same setting forever as long as your spine is in even inches or half inches (for example: 6 inches, 8-1/2 inches, 11 inches). It's the thirds or other fractions that cause partial holes.

If your Rubi is fairly new, it has black circles that indicate exactly where the holes will be punched... I'm not sure exactly when they added those marks, but I know the older machines don't have them. On an older machine, you can use junk mail or other recycled paper to test the hole pattern and adjust the paper guide; then you'll be all set!

Let me know if this is not clear and I'll try to explain it better.

Default Rubi tip

Hmmm. Just re-read your note and I might have misunderstood your problem. If your holes are punching OFF the edge of the spine, here's how to solve that: Before pulling the handle down to punch, just tap your paper towards the back of the machine -- you should be able to hear and feel the paper hit, and you'll know then that it's in as far as it can go.

3:1 Pitch Color Coil

I haven't tried these yet but the price is much better and it says they are 3to1 in.
