If you want a stand alone die cutting machine, the Big Shot/Big Kick is a good investment. It can cut most dies with different 'sandwiches'. (Thick ones and the wafer think new) The BS comes with a multipurpose platform and 2 acrylic plates. You can emboss using most embossing folders and and die cut with this machine. It is sturdy, stable and doesn't take up too much crafting area 'real estate'. The opening where the platform/plates goes through is approximately 6" wide.
When my first BS stopped rolling with a sandwich stuck midway through, I immediately replaced it. With the assist of my LSS owner, I was able to unstick the sandwich and with a little sewing machine oil 'revive' my first BS. Now I have 2 working machines - so a 'back up' in case is I get a sandwich stuck again.
You can buy a BS other places besides SU and for a lower price because of sales. My newer BS is a teal color or the BK comes in periwinkle if you don't want black.
Good luck and happy die cutting. Sorry I am enabling you because there are sooo many dies you 'need' - $$$$$
