If you're using the one that came in the starter kit, make this sandwich:
White Platform + clear cutting pad + Easy Emboss Folder with paper inside it, layered over the stencil design,
and closed + 2nd clear cutting pad.
I had no problems embossing with the Embosy Emboss Folder in the above sandwich on my Big Shot.

Can I use other brass stencils with the BS? |
Yes. But, you will probably need certain accessories to do so. Read this post here:
Forums at Splitcoaststampers
in the
Accessories for Big Shot thread.
If you don't want to purchase those accessories to use off-brand brass stencils and other brand texture plates in your Big Shot, you will need to experiment with different sandwiches, possibly chipboard shims and other materials that others have been using, such as mousepads (mousepads vary in thickness from thin to thick, and I have no idea which one would work best) to get them to emboss those other brand stencils.

Also does the CB emboss with brass stencils? I'm trying to decide if I need to pick up one of these. The BS is so big and all I have for room is a little coat closet. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Some folks are using the Wizard Charm Embossing Kit in their Cuttlebug to do this. Others are using mousepads, and others are using rubber gasket sheets found at a hardware store. Results with all of these will vary and I can't tell you which of them would work best in the Big Shot with off-brand brass stencils.
You can explore the Cuttlebug Sandwich Stacks thread,
HERE, and document to see if that offers any useful information you might apply to your Big Shot. Or, experiment on your own to find what works for you with your machine.
HTH,
