Default Copic Markers

Ok, so which style of markers should we get sketch, copic or caio?? And what do you see as the difference? Should we buy individuals and try them first? I love gamsol magic and this looks like it would be similar.

Thanks
Kathy

I would make sure you get a marker with the sketch tip. I was pleasantly surprised by how you can color in tiny detailed images with it. I hardly ever use the chisel tip. I have the sketch markers and love them. I'm using them so much I'm sure I'll be buying refills soon!

I have about 20 copic sketch markers that I have been buying individually at a local art store. I am not particularly talented in the "coloring" area, so like any other medium, these require practice, experimentation, and it helps to have some talent too! I don't go out of my way to get them (but the store is next to my grocery store!!), so I happen to drop by once in a while and get a few ...

I am using my prismacolor pencils a lot (mainly without the gamsol) and want to really get better using those and also watercolors before I try my hand at coloring in images with the copics. These are pretty expensive and there isn't anything magical about them -- I don't find them easier to master than anything else, but I know that I've seen some amazingly beautiful things done with them, and I speak only for my result! I think if I could go to a class to teach me how to use these it would really help a lot.

That said, the copics have a couple of features that I think put them in another class and make buying at least a few of them worth the $$$ --

1. you can use them to very easily color brads, embellishments, etc. including ribbon! I also used them just to change the color of the background of some printed paper from white to cream. Got to love that and this is why I think it is worth investing in some of these.

2. the copic air brush system looks so cool. I don't have it, but I want it. The sketch markers are the only copics that will fit into the copic airbrush system. I think that makes the sketch the "go to" copic marker, IMHO. The backgrounds around stamped images that I've seen folks make with these are just lovely, lovely, and I think using the airbrush to make patterned paper will rock!!

You can see some wonderful examples using copic markers at a lot of blogs including

www.ellenhutson.typepad.com

good luck

The Sketch and Ciao both have the same nibs (replaceable tips) and use the same ink. My understanding of the main differences are they have different shaped barrels with the Sketch holding more ink, but both are refillable. Also, like Joan stated, only the Sketch can be used with the airbrush system, but not everyone will purchase that. The Sketch markers offer a larger choice of colors, yet the Ciao still have I believe 144 colors. Oh...the Ciao are cheaper.

There are at least three SCS members who have fabulous online stores offering fantastic customer service you can order these markers from...Ellen Hutson, Electic Paperie and MFT. I could be wrong but I think only Electic Paperie offer the Ciaos.

HTH.

Just my humble opinion...I was ready to go out and buy a set....instead I found a store that had copic, and one that had prismacolor...bought a few of each...have "played" several times with them...they are OK for me...but then I am no great colorer using any medium.
Am re thinking the purchasing of any set now...maybe I have what is needed between the peerless atercolors, watercolor crayons, plain markers, etc to get the job done

Correction: MFT offers the Ciaos also. Sorry for the wrong info in my post above.

When I first heard about Copic markers, I purchased a 72 set of the Ciaos. Then I became interested in the airbrush system and ordered 12 Sketch markers in soft colors that I thought I would like for background effects. Now that I have used both types, in hindsight I would have chosen the Sketch markers first. I like the flatter shape because they do not roll around on (or off) the table, and the colors are marked on both ends of the marker (Y21, B00, etc.) and they fit the airbrush.

As I collect additional colors, they will be Sketch markers.

Do the Copics have a solvent odor?

The Prismacolor markers, which I like quite a bit, do have that odor which can be a bit much in a small room.

Thanks!
