Question for ATG users

I have been thinking about purchaing an ATG gun, but have a question for those of you who have used one.

Is loading the ATG gun anything like loading a Dotto refill? I seem to be Dotto refill challenged and don't want to buy something that I won't be able to use.

hahahahahahaha

I was so bad at reloading the Dotto that I gave away my dispenser.

I can, however, load my ATG without a problem but I will say that it's only become second nature recently. I know there's actually a video that will show you just how to do it, but I cannot tell you where at this point. Someone is sure to chime in.

I followed this video and got it on the first try! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtyKPRoeOgA

I'm not familiar with the dotto but I find the ATG really easy to load.

Scamper64 05-04-2010 05:20 AM

I don't know anything about the Dotto, but I was like you. I was intimidated to order an ATG because I was afraid I couldn't load it after hearing some of the horror stories. Well, I bit the bullet and did it--and it's fine! AND, I LOVE my ATG and wish I'd not waited so long to get one. Good luck!

The ATG gun is easy to load. It does take a little getting use to using. My only complaint is that I am left handed and it is definately made for right handed people. (like everything else in the world) :) It's hard to see where the tape is placed when you are left handed. But I use it. And the refills are SO much cheaper!!

this has been asked a million times but what is the best ATG and where did you buy it

Crafter 4 Life 05-04-2010 06:54 AM

Love my 3M ATG now that I have the corrected/improved one. Originally, I had a defective one but 3M 'made it right'. I don't have trouble loading now that I have had my ATG for several years. Have been making lots of cards to donate to various causes and have had to reload the ATG 3-4 times (Big creative spurt & don't want 'things' to stay where I place them.) in the past few weeks.

BillieDee 05-04-2010 11:59 AM

That made me laugh.
The first time I loaded my ATG I had video directions and had to try 5? times. Second time I was at a swap and, of course, forgot to bring directions. What do you know? It loaded correctly the first time.

kikikaren 05-04-2010 02:53 PM

It is a bit similar to loading as Dotto, though MUCH easier. I just have to remember that the tape loads upside down to me. It took me a couple of tries the first time, but it's been easy ever since. 100+ rolls later, I still love it!

I have the 700 (for 1/2 inch tape) with an adapter in it for 1/4 inch tape. I'm about to replace it (after dropping it many, many times and losing a key part it's not working as well towards the end of the roll) and will replace it with a 714. The 714 is designed for the 1/4 inch tape, which seems to be all I use (for card making, scrapbooking, and home decor). I buy everything from www.framingsupplies.com. Look under their Scotch/3M section.

RubberLady603 05-04-2010 03:18 PM

Another vote for Framing Supplies. Fast shipping and genuine 3M products. Once you stick something down it is STUCK. I got the 714 a couple years ago and I'm still happy with it and would replace it if I ever broke it.

MamaSchwich 05-04-2010 04:40 PM

I have the 714 and use the 987 tape (the pressure sensitive one). I've never had a card fall apart, and it is WAY cheap. I'll bet that I only spend $20-$30 on tape A YEAR (when I am stamping a lot; this year was more like $10). I used to spend that much a month when I was buying refills of store-bought tapes...
Get one, you won't regret it!!!

MakCards 05-04-2010 04:57 PM

I have the 714 and I had directions the first time I loaded it. The second time, I couldn't find the directions and panicked, but noticed a raised diagram (black on black) on the take-up reel. I followed it, and it worked! :)

daisystamper 05-04-2010 05:31 PM

Thanks for all the replies! I just ordered a 714 with 908 tape from framing supplies!

Yeah.....

The order I placed on the 4th should be here tomorrow! Talk about fast shipping!!!! I can't wait!!!

RubberLady603 05-08-2010 02:50 AM

How exciting! You will be so pleased.
It takes a few minutes to get used to but so worth it. Let us know how you like it!

jeaniebean55 05-08-2010 03:05 AM

I'm so glad you asked, and I'll be checking out the link. I've had an ATG for years, couldn't reload it ages ago. Been using the adhesive tape without the gun, using my bone folder to press it onto whatever the project is. Yay! I might actually get to use the gun again! LOL!

bklyngal62 05-08-2010 03:56 AM

I don't feel so bad now. I thought I was the only one that has had trouble. I've had my ATG sitting here for about 3 weeks and gave up loading it. I'm going to give it another try today.

StampingShawn 05-08-2010 06:11 PM

I just searched ATG loading on youtube and found a couple of videos. Easy peasy! I had put off buying one for years because I'm not very technically savvy and I worried that I couldn't load the thing. It wasn't a problem!

I got my from framingsupplies. I decided to go with the 3M because I heard there were some "sticky" problems with the cheaper models (i.e. the tape would end up in a big ball). I'm totally thrilled with my purchase.

KristiK 05-08-2010 09:18 PM

Me too....Love my atg!

I have two 714 ATG's. One is loaded with the gold adhesive which is strictly for scrapbooking and the other one is loaded with the regular adhesive which is for cards. The gold is more expensive than the regular.

This is "hands down" the best purchase I have ever made.
I too had a defective one and 3M was amazing and replaced it no problem.

Unfortunately Framing Supplies doesn't ship to Canada, so I had to pay the much more expensive amount and buy them up here.

RubberLady603 05-09-2010 04:22 AM

So here is another question........Is the "regular" 3m tape as sticky as the "gold"? I have always bought the gold because way back when I first ordered that is what I chose. I have been afraid to try the regular because the gold sticks so well. I have card samples that I made a couple years ago that are still stuck perfectly with the gold version. I just got 2 more boxes of gold but maybe next order I could try the 3M regular from Framing Supplies?

Hmmmmmm ...
I have always been aware of my budget ... therefore, I have "never" ordered the "gold".
I always order this from Framing Supplies.

I have "always" and will continue to laud the "924 ATG" adhesive.
This stuff rocks! Faaaaar more tack/(stickiness)!

When I need "extra" stick (such as on boxes, etc), I move on to Scor-Tape ... equivalent in high-tack to the 'red-line' tapes, but without the added thickness.

HTH! ;)

resqbarbie 05-09-2010 05:20 AM

they are both the same, I have not found one to be stickier than the other so I always get the cheaper one....go to ebay for it, The Tape Depot always has specials....

RubberLady603 05-09-2010 05:42 AM

Thanks ladies!! Next time I call Framing Supplies I will try a box of the 924. That will save me some money so I can get more stamps. LOL!

I'm Hooked 05-09-2010 12:16 PM

I was told that the gold is acid and lignin free for scrapbooking, whereas the regular is not, so should only be used for cardmaking. If anyone knows this to be wrong, please let me know -- as yes, the gold is certainly pricier. That's why I have the two guns so that I'm not changing adhesive (which I'm not so sure would even be possible)
