Question about paper piercing...

What do you use as a template? I want to get a paper piercing tool. Just curious as to what template you use. I was looking at the paper mat pack from SU but couldn't tell much about what sort of template it is. I also looked at the one Gina K has. What do you recommend?

I love SU's piercing guide! There are four different sections on it.
One for closely spaced piercing & another for further apart piercing.

Then there are two different areas for brad or eyelet holes - one close together & another further apart or for larger brads.

It also has dark lines on the edges of the guide that you use to line up with the edge of your card stock to make sure you pierce evenly on the edges.

I thought I had read somewhere about using plastic canvas. I have some of that already. Now, I'll have to find some of the circles or either make my own. TFS!

The SU ones you are referring to, would those be the brass templates?

Realize ladies that if you do use the plasitc canvas you take the chance of not getting perfect spacing for your holes (this is also said in the first internet link shown in a previous post). The holes on the plastic canvas are much larger than on a traditional piercing template. This may or may not make a difference to you. I prefer to use a traditional piercing template which are readily available in all sorts of shapes and designs.

Angela -- Usually when people talk about the SU piercing guide, they are talking about the one that comes as part of the Mat Pack, not a brass template. The pack contains the plastic guide, a piercing mat, and a mat for hammering eyelets. Hope this helps!

Does StampinUp have a tutorial on their piercing guide. I bought it, but could not figure everything out

to Biko8666 I was wondering the same thing about the SU paper piercing plastic template. it has all kinds of holes, measurements, etc. that i don't quite understand how to use. It would be nice to see a tutorial on how to use it effectively.

I think I may write SU to see if there is a video or something that explains how to use it to it's fullest advantage.

Tim Holtz also has a ruler with holes along the top for piercing. Costs about $7.00 at Michael's (then the 40-50% off coupon). No learning curve. It may not be as versatile as the mat pack, I don't know, but I like the ruler.

I've never used the Ornare templates, but I have tried the Hasty Lace ones. I just didn't have the patience (certainly not their fault!).
On the other hand, if you want to pierce free hand, you can always stamp a flourish on vellum and use that as a template. That way you can move it around to exactly where you want it & only pierce the lines that you want to use.

Remember that plastic canvas comes in different sizes. The common 7 holes per inch size has large holes and you will have accuracy issues. I use a piece that's 14 holes to the inch so it has smaller holes spaced much closer together.

Thank you so much for the video. I don't want to purchase any other items, just want to know how to use what I have. So thank you for answering the question on some of the things a mat pack can be used for.
