I just ordered a variety pack to try out because I am fairly new and I do really like the textured card stock from Bazzil and DCVW. My question is, I have a few colors that I would like to get more of, so should I buy the 12x12 or the 8x11 size? I realize they are like $2 more a pack, and I DO NOT scrapbook..just make cards and other projects. What's the better deal here? thanks
I only make cards also. I have bought the 12x12 in the past and ended up with lots of scraps after trimming down to make cards. (Do scrap piles every deplete??) Lately I just buy the 8.5x11 size. I never have enough foresight to figure out how to use up the scraps from my 12x12 cardstock.
If you do decide to get 12x12 paper I learned a great way to store scraps from "scrappintica" (here's her quote):
"I've made 3 - 2 in. binders of which 2 of them have the 4 SU color families in them (2 in each binder) and the 3rd binder has the In Colors and all the neutrals. Works awesome, I just face the binder towards me for whatever I'm doing and it's all at my fingertips. One hint is to put a full sheet of cardstock for each color in the page protectors for 2 reasons #1 - it holds the page protector up and #2 - you can easily identify the colors. Then all your scraps go infront of the full page and let me tell ya, it has greatly reduced my scraps since it's the first thing I grab when I sit down at my table. And if you have an OCD issues about organizing...............lol this is a good one!!!"

I found that I am using my scraps like I've never used them before!!!!! First place I go now!
A while back I had the same question (and was bored late at night) so I calculated the cost per square inch for each size of paper. It works out to be essentially the same.
I prefer 8 1/2 x 11 because they're easier for me to store and handle.
Agree with everyone else - 8 1/2 X 11 is the practical way to go if you are a card maker. I've gotten 12 X 12 with the thought I would cut it down and have scraps, but most times it goes into a pile of other 12 X 12 and goes unused. The ones I have cut down tend to have one or more corners that have been dinged up beforehand that have to worked around when I'm using the scrap part - less paper damage with normal page sized cs, in my opinion.
If you are just into making cards I would highly recommend the smaller size as you can just cut it down the middle and you have the base for two cards. Or 4 card fronts.
