I just really dont understand how the Perfect Layers works ... can someone explain it to me? I hear SO many wonderful things about it and people seem to LOVE it, but I just cant picture using it. Thanks!

Okay...the Perfect Layers is a set of two rulers. Each side of the ruler has a ridge on it that measures a different width.

You take whatever you want to layer and adhere it to what you want to layer it on (did that even make sense?) then butt up the ridge to the edge of the top layer. Then you simply cut on the outside of the ruler. You have now created a perfect layer!!

It is hard to explain, but it is a wonderful tool. I use it all the time for making cards and scrapbooking.

Basically, each ruler has four different widths (eight widths all together). Each width has a "lip" on the ruler. What you do is adhere the cs with your image on it (the top piece) onto another piece of cardstock (your mat). Pick the width that you want and "catch" your top piece on the lip and cut. Do it for each side and when you're done you'll have a perfect mat. It's awesome!

Hope that helps!!

How about a picture? See if the attached diagram makes sense.

Default Another question

Thanks for the picture, Chris. I finally "get it."
One more question....
Do you cut with an eXacto knife? Or with a rolling cutter?

Glad the picture helped! I admit that the whole concept of the thing made no sense to me until I had it in my hands. But it sure is neat! No more crooked layers!

I cut with my hobby blade (aka exacto knife). The rulers are plastic, but they have a metal edge embedded in each side, so as long as you hold your blade straight up and down, you get a great straight cut.

Thanks Chris for the illus. It sure helps to confirm what you think you see when you read.
So the perfect layers are 2 rulers, each with 2 diff size lips- 1 on ea side.. right?
Ok, then what do you cut with? Does a cutter of some sort come with the set or is that an option.. as in however you want, rotary cutter, or draw line and cut with scissors or personal cutter? TIA

Yes, there are two rulers. Each has four different sized lips on it (both left and right sides, top and bottom), so there are eight different mat sizes that you can make, ranging from 1/16" up to 1/2". The cutting implement is your choice and does not come with it.

Default Where do I find this ruler?

Is this a stampin up ruler? I am definitely challenged in this area and could use some help getting straight edges and borders the size I intended. Thanks.

Yes, it's from SU! Page 223 of the catalog - Perfect Layers Tool, item number 105962, $22.95 (US price).

Oooohhhhhhhhh...*light bulb on* Ok...it's on my wishlist. See I was getting this confused with something in the old catty (I guess) that looked like a couple of wheels...or maybe it was in the TAC catty....:S

Faereygirl, I bet you are thinking of the wheel guide. I thought they were the same too. Needless to say Perfect Layers is on my list now too .

I like your blog, was going to post there but I don't have time right now to register. Anyhow, I am happy to hear about your new club. LOVE the gift card holder! too cute! I am in a SU club too. I too, do not have many friends that stamp or do any other crafts for that matter. The gals I have met in the club (my new crafty friends) are so much fun! We have a ball, I so look forward to my monthly get together! That's about the only time I get to stamp!!!

Thank you all for this information! They have been sitting here by my desk for months, just gathering dust.

Seems nothing I *read* made any sense to me.

One look at the pdf. file and BINGO! Lightbulf moment!

Can you use the Coulzzle knife with the perfect layers tool or does the swivel blade cause problems?

I have a layering tool set (forget the name) from SU. It's four small metal disks with a hole in the middle of each disk. It works pretty much like the perfect layers -- except it's for not straight edges. You put a pencil in the hole and follow the shape of the top layer. Your pencil will make a line on the bottom layer and then you just cut it out with scissors. The sizes start at 1/16" and go up in increments.

I love the Perfect Layers, but it does take some getting used to. I had to learn to hold the ruler down tight so it didn't move and only use a limited amount of adhesive. But I love my layers, wouldn't trade them. In fact, I own 2 sets.
