Does it look like a woodburning tool with an exacto blade? I have those items, will they work? These blades are designed to go with the woodburning tool.
Yep (at least that's what I was told). I got mine at Walmart. There are a bunch of tips that came with it, but I've only used the 'exacto-like' knife so far.
That's exactly what mine looks like. If you have a Mike's, HL or Joann's nearby try there first (with coupon!). My Mike's has started putting a 'cute' one with the sb stuff, but there are others over with the woodburning stuff. More/different tips, maybe a temp control. The one I got is the Hot Marks brand. So far I've only used the knife blade too, but I was going to use the little foot attachment to try embossing on velvet ribbon for a bookmark (a la Hot Potatoes). I might chicken out and use the iron though... ;)

my DH is new to woodburning but he says the woodburning tool gets WAY TO HOT for velvet.
Don't just love hot potatoes? She's amazing when she's on Carol Duval!
Oooo, good to know! Thankfully I got involved in covering a box last night instead of velvet trials. I can only imagine the smell of burnig velvet wafting through the house... yuck!
Yup, Mary is a lot of fun to watch. Man I miss Carol Duval. Martha just isn't doin' it for me! :p

While Tivo comes in handy, trust me, there's not much on DIY that's worth it either.... :(

what are hot knifes used for,,,,, just cutting like in place of an exacto?
I saw Mary on Carol Duval and she gave a tour of her crafting cottage. She has an entire cottage just for her business. She has a bedroom for just the bolts of velvet hanging on racks. I still get Carole on Tivo but yes she is retired. I hate to see her go to, there is nobody else like her on tv. Now all the new shows seem trendy.

the hot knife is used for cutting exmount for your unmounted stamps. i'm sure there are other uses, but in the stamping world, that's the biggie.
I've wanted to try this and would love to know how to do it.
Do you cut the images out of the rubber sheet first and then put the ez mount on the individual rubber image and trim just the ez mount with the hot knife or can you put the ez mount on the entire rubber sheet of images and cut out the individual rubber images and ez mount at the same time?

Thx for any help.
I've heard of people doing it both ways! I tried it with already trimmed rubber - it was Amazing! I can't even tell you how cool it was!
I did learn a couple of things, it's really easy to undercut your foam and DON'T touch it (sheesh, ask me how I learned that!). So - to solve the undercutting issue - I mounted the stamps on EZM, peeled off the backing from the static cling side & stuck that to a piece of glass. That made it a whole lot easier to cut straight up & down. In the interst of conserving foam - I crammed those babies on there. Yeah, umm, leave yourself a little room to manuver, 1/4 to 1/8 inch between images should do it.
As for learning not to touch it... had to learn that the hard way.
Here's a link to a youtube video where a woman uses the hot knife. Seriously, I have no idea how she managed not to undercut every single one. Sure does give you the right idea though.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgbyk...eature=related
Good luck!

Thanks for the great info, the link, AND the laughs  Rare is the day I don't have some craft wound lol......sometimes I repeat the same 'injury' DOH lolol...
I will try definitely try trimming with the hot knife. I usually undercut the ez mount no matter how careful I am so there's no where to go but up. :-D

I know! I was completely absorbed... all hunched over the glass... determined that I WOULD NOT undercut... actually watching the smoke coming up - when I reached out to 'help' the blade! Yikes! (trust me, I said a lot more than that) Then I had to explain to dh why I had a huge blister on my finger - nothing better than feeling stupid all over again.
So, ladies, I mean it! Don't touch the knife!:p
