Default Prismacolor Questions

OK, so I finally decided to get nice coloring pencils, now that I think my work is worth it. I went on the Prismacolor Web site and immediately got confused. There's several different kinds.

So ... what kind do I get for coloring in images? Premier? Lightfast? Verithin? Watercolor? Or something called Scholar? And what's the difference?

And are they sold at Mikes? or do I need to go online? and if so, anyone have a good Web site?

I'm going to be stuck in my apartment for a couple of weeks soon after I have some foot surgery so I'd love to have some nice pencils to take my mind off it.

Thanks for the help!

Short answer:
You want premier and they are at Michaels, use a coupon.

Long answer:

Primier: Artist grade creamy rich colored pencil, great for shading with or without "magic colored pencil" type technique.

verithin: has a really hard lead so it sharpens to a teensy point, but I felt didn't give nice rich color so I don't like them, some folks do though, they are a specialty one though

Lightfast: are for artists when the art will be exposed to light. You don't need that for cardmaking, the normal ones are lightfast enough for general use.

Watercolor are totally different, they are watercolor paint, in a pencil, so you can use them with water and a paint brush or even a blender pen, but they are not at all like normal pencils (they are quite nice though)

Scholar are student grade and just generally not as nice, they have less pigment per binder.

This whole pigment vs. binder is why prismacolor are nice in the first place, there is a lot more pigment per wax in them, so you get really rich almost creamy color with them as opposed to a kid's pencil which is lighter and waxier.

great answer Erin K!

I just wanted to add that I purchased the Lightfast and they do work for the magic color pencil (odorless mineral spirits and blending stump) method of shading. So I'd recommend whichever version is cheaper- Lightfast or Premier

I just bought a 12 pack of the premier pencils at M's. There was a free offer in it for 3 of the light fast pencils. I like the premier really well, the colors blend nice and look pretty bright. Have fun playing.

I got my mega monster pack of Premiers at Michaels too, great deal great pencils, BUT!! I don't think Michaels is too careful with their packages etc. Colored pencils are very sensitive to temperature changes, humidity and most importantly bumping them around. I got quite a few in my pack that I had to shave down to about half their size to finally get a point that doesn't break and crumble. I will to go to the art store and replace those, think I still got a good deal with a coupon but be prepared for some breakage among them. Can't tell from the outside, only when you start sharpening them. Don't drop your pencils!!

thanks for the quick response everyone. Erin K, what a great lesson - now I know exactly what to get. I am hoping there will be a Mike's coupon in Sunday's paper so I can run over there.

I love SCSers!!!!

I've been doing alot of color pencil work lately and have just started taking a colored pencil studio class. Here's what I'm told about the breaking problem with the pencils. Yes, the leads can be broken if the pencils are dropped, and they should be handled carefully. But, that's not the only issue. Some of the leads are softer than others just because of the pigment (Canary yellow is always a problem for me). Also, the pencil sharpener makes a huge difference. My teacher recommended the Panasonic battery operated sharpener. I have an Exacto sharpener and she cringes every time I use it. The girls in class with the Panasonics don't have problems with breaking as much, and they get a much better point on their pencils. I've got a Panasonic on order!
