Default My piercing mat is worn out!

I think I've worn the darn thing out. I am going to try and be sure to use the outer edges of it as well, but I've used this so often I think my mat is worn out! How do I know? Well, when I go to punch a hole and there's nothing padding it behind other than a swiss-cheese mat, the cardstock wants to bend before it allows a hole to poke through. Does anyone know what I mean?

Anyway, I will use mine for as long as I can, but does anyone know what alternatives there are to the regular mat from SU!? I have that stuff already and don't need another template, just the padding.

Even better, how about a bigger pad? I'd LOVE to have one that is at least the size of my card fronts rather than having to move the mat as I go.

Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried an old mouse pad (for a computer mouse)?

Mine is shot too. It curls up it has so many holes. I do have an old mouse pad but they just are not the same. I will probably have to break down and order another crafters kit for the little mat. I feel your pain.
Blessings.

have you all checked out the Ornare paper piecing products they carry a piercing pad for about $4-$5 or what about a self healing Fiskaars cutting mat would that work? I have never paper pierced but I have seen some really pretty things done that way I have been thinking of trying it. Have a great evening ~~~Bluegirl~~

I've seen extra thick craft foam at the craft store. It comes in really big sheets.

Bazzill makes a 12 1/2 inch by 6 1/2 inch mat. I am thinking I'm going to order one of these since it will fit much better with my Tim Holtz Design Ruler. Here's a link to one at an online store.

Amber, you know they sell the mat pack separately now, right? It's $9.95 for the mat and the template. At least it's not the whole kit expense!

I'm going the other way, and wanted something smaller. I stamp on a small table and I like things that don't take up a lot of room, but I want them handy to use. I just ordered this neat set.

It comes with a small piercing block and a short handled piercer, so you can just stick the piercer in the block when you're not using it. Only $6 with free shipping.

I saw that one and it looks exactly like the old SU! pencil tops they used to have as a Demo supply. I guess in a pinch I could pull one of those out and a piercer I have and see what happens, but at least for me the bigger one will work. I comletely understand your situation though, with having a smaller space to work with. You'll have to let me know how that turns out for you.

Good luck~

I ordered this from Ellen! It's GREAT! I love having a larger/longer one so I don't have to move the paper to move down the card!!!

I had a pair of pink flip flops (never worn) laying around! I cut one to 2 1/2" x 4 1/2". I keep it close by. I love it. It speaks out to me in it's vivid color. Stick a push pin in it and take it anywhere.

Default I got mine at the dollar store

My piercing/eyelet mat is from the dollar store. It's slightly bigger than a card front and I've had no problems with it. Dollarama (in Toronto, Canada) is a great store - it has more stuff for adults than for kids!

I have a swatch of “stuff” that originally was about 12x18 inches that I used to use to transfer images onto t-shirts that I then painted. (Remember that era!). It is about 3/4 of an inch thick and has silver material on one side and a white fuzzy material on the other. I think it was to transfer images with my iron onto a t-shirt, much like an ironing board cover. Anyway, I remember I bought it at Joann’s and I have since cut it down to a convenient size and use it anytime I have to pierce something. It works great and I can get several pieces out of 1 sheet. Does anyone know what it is or what it’s called?

I've used an old mouse pad for a very long time. I have the design side facing up (it's some type of cloth with Taz on it) and it shows no signs of wear at all and it's the perfect size.

I use a foam pad made for your knees during gardening. I have other piercing hobbies and these work great. You can many time find them at Big Lots or Dollar store for $1.

Smile piercing pad

I love the soft styrofoam one I got with my Coluzzle. It works great for piercing and then I use a self healing mat for my cutting projects

OK I have a different question but related--if you get the kit from SU does it come with a template also? I cannot pierce a straight line for the life of me, even using a "stitches template" (it doesn't have just the dots, it has little x's and I pierce the end of the x's). I thought you got more than a mat & piercing tool?
TIA!

Yes, you also get a little square plastic guide for piercing differently spaced holes. It's the same size as the mat.

I use 4 sheets of fun foam stuck together and Tim Holtz's design ruler with a making memories piercer. It is pure joy!?! heeee... and all for under $20.00. You can do 12" paper too because the fun foam is about 12x 8.5 inches & the ruler is 12" long. I anchor the design ruler with two straight pins. It doesn't shift.

fun foam $4.00
Ruler around $7.00
Piercer around $ 5.00

If you get the tool kit you'll receive the piercing tool as well as other various gadgets, but if you get the mat pack, it only comes with the piercing guide and mat, no piercer. HTH
