but my favorite skin color is E00 Skin White, but a new one that I just purchased for a bit darker skin tone is E53 Raw Silk.
A few of my other must have colors are YR21 for a blonde hair color
and my favorite green for grass and leaves is G24 Willow and for a pretty sky color blue I use BG10 Cool Shadow or B00 frost Blue.
I'll be checkin in on this post though cuz I love to see what others favorite colors are!
I would recommend the BG000 or B000, I love the light blue colors, but I use those for outlining an image, and with the blender marker I use for coloring glass, wings of insects etc.
BTW when I was getting the markers I wanted them all, I needed them all...LoL

Here's my most used list:
C1 Cool Gray 1, C3 Cool Gray 3 (for Shadows)
00 Blender Pen
Y21 Buttercup Yellow, YR23 Yellow Ochre (Saffron/Mustard shadows)
R35 Coral, R46 Strong Red, R59 Cardinal (Nice rich red combo)
G21 Lime Green, G63 Pea Green, G99 Olive (Celery/Wasabi color w/ dark shadows)
E00 Skin White
B000 Pale Porcelain Blue ***This was the first one I had to refill
BG01 Aqua Blue, BG05 Holiday Blue (Caribbean/Turquoise)
E33 Sand, E35 Chamois, E47 Dark Brown (Nice, rich brown)
E37 Sepia, E49 Dark Bark (very dark, great when added with the above colors)
V06 Lavender, V17 Amethyst, V09 Violet (More of an Eggplant, but I bet if you added some cool gray, it would look like Vintage Violet)
R81, R83, R85 Rose Red (My fave pink combo...kinda like Pretty in Pink with Regal Rose shadows)

thanks sista!!! I will definitely order these up!!!
Just from what Ellen Hutson has on her site, I think she compares Vintage Violet to BV29 slate....which is an excellent match! For me, I wanted something not so dark as VV (which BV29 is), so took the next colour before that, which is BV25 Grayish Violet.....goes really well as a compliment for VV....just a lighter shade of VV. My next Copic purchase I'll get the next colour before that BV23 Grayish Lavender, for shading.

I buy the sketch stlye copics from www.carpediemstore.com They sell for $3.95 each with a shipping cap of about $11. It seems a tiny bit high for markers however the actual cost per marker is cheaper that anywhere else. Plus I always have my orders in my hot little hand with in 3 days!!!
As far as skin I almost always reach for E00, but I would love to try some new skintones! For a darker violet color I use BV23 and shadow with BV29. For a midtone violet I use BV11 and shadow with BV17. For a lighter violet I use V91 and shadow with V95.
ETA: after you place your first order with Cardpe Diem they give an additional discount, I am not exactly sure what the % is but it make the markers about $3.75 eachI may be off a bit on the exact amounts but I would say very close. Just be sure to contact Carpe Diem about the added discount. I am up to about 150 colors and plan to add to my stash. I absolutely love them, the more colors I have the more details I can create! Hope this HELPS!
I love Copic markers and have more than my DH knows about. LOL!
You've had a bunch of great suggestions, but I'll add a few notes that might help you.
1. Buy a couple of colors from the same blending family. By that I mean, BG1X (like BG10, BG13 and BG18 are all in the same blending family. They have the same tonal qualities and will match as shades of one another.
2. Space out the colors a few numbers off of each other for a good blend. I really love E31. Because I knew the color from E30 wouldn't vary much from E31 Brick Beige, I didn't buy it. The run I listed above is a good spacing.
3. As you increase through the color blending families (the first number in the product code), you get more grey. Moving from a BG00 (which is very bright) to a BG93 (with lots of grey).
Some of my favorite browns:
E31, E33, E35, and E37 (really reminds me of a rich suede brown jacket)
E50 and E53 - creamy tans
I have about 120 markers and more on the way today. I buy from Carpe Diem. They are fast and have a great price.

I don't mean to hijack, but wanted to offer a word of caution on Carpe Diem:
I placed two $100+ orders for Copics from Carpe Diem Store this summer. One order I did not check over carefully until recently and they short shipped a marker. When I asked about it, they said that they: "WE CHECKED OUR INVENTORIES&YOUR ORG.ORDER THAT EVERY THING IS MATCH.
OUR STANDARD&EXPECTATION ARE HIGH FROM THE COMPANY POLICY.
FROM YOU PLACED THE ORDER,IT HAS TO BEEN THRU AT LEAST -- 1 COMPUTER SCAN 2 PERSONS PACK&COUNT (W/COPIC BOX--FIT 3 MARKERS) 1 PERSON COUNT AGAIN & PACK INTO BOX READY TO SHIP IT'S QUITE IMPOSSIBLE THAT WE'LL MISSING 1 MARKER LIKE YOU DESCRIBE " [email protected]
I should have checked it sooner....but who knows if that would have made a difference. My business is going with Oozak now.

Totally subscribing! I'm just in the process of picking out my first batch of markers. I'm feeling totally lost. I don't know whether to get the sketch kits, or to pick my own colours, so all your information is so very very helpful.

Just wanted to make mention how helpful this info is to a Copic Novice...
Hi
I have bought all of mine from MerriArtist! They are super efficient and the MOST helpful. The sketch markers sell for $4.46 and if you spend $90 shipping is free! I have ordered one day and had my markers in hand the next! They might be more than CarpeDiem but they have only been great.
Thanks, Jodi

FABULOUS Lisa! Glad to hear from you!!!
thanks for your input- I have about 90, and a lot of the colors you already mentioned, but am wanting to get a few newer shades as well- I have only boought from Carpe once, but it was a good experience- I will check my order more thoroughly though after reading others experience.
Just wanted to make mention how helpful this info is to a Copic Novice...
So glad I could help. A great resource for Copic markers is Marianne at www.ilikemarkers.com
She's worked for Copic for years and is responsible for training others in their benefits. Her blog is a wealth of info!

p.s. AJ - I told my husband that I have such a hard time deciding on the colors. He said, "why don't you just get them all." He clearly doesn't know there are 322 Sketch colors and that it would cost a mint. I didn't have the heart or nerve to take him up on this. LOL!
