Default Sizzix bigz dies black foam

The foam has changed over the years on the Sizzix (SU and TH) bigz dies. The older dies have a denser black foam on the back than the newer dies that have a sparkly spongier black foam. Does anyone know which is more durable and better? Thanks!

The foam is there to keep the blades from being exposed so I'm not sure it makes a difference, I've had dies for years with no issues. I once had a defective die (the whole thing - foam & blades) fell out of the case, Sizzix sent me a replacement.

I also have older Bigz dies I bought on sale several years ago and use with no problem. The thick black foam works extremely well.

The sponge is there 1. so blades are not exposed. 2. to hold the paper 'in place' so it is easy to remove after cutting. The style of the sponge would not affect my decision to buy a die.

I did too, I had just run it through my big shot and wiped my hand over the foam to wipe away the little specks of card waste when my hand made contact with the blade which was jutting out over the foam. Luckily I was doing it very lightly and didn't actually cut myself. I have never experience this before or since so can only assume that it was a defective die.
