misting -
 

Does anyone else have a problem with their cardstock after misting. I 'misted' with perfect pearls and let it dry only to come back and the cardstock had buckled. I tried to flatten it out as best I could before adhering it to another piece of cardstock, but it's not laying entirely flat - any ideas what is causing this?? Thank you.

It sounds like your cardstock is saturated if it's buckling that badly so maybe you're a bit heavy-handed with the mister? either that or it's very lightweight cardstock. Adding moisture is almost inevitably going to make cardstock react but it should flatten back out well enough to stick to another layer and look smooth.

Try misting more lightly and letting it dry and then if you want more saturated colour, add another light misting.

You could also try ironing your buckled cardstock to resuce it. Put it between a couple of sheets of clean copy paper and use a fairly hot iron.

Thank you, Joanne. I will go easy with the misting. You are right - I think that is the problem.

Another thing you might try (once you light up on the misting LOL) is to mist the back side of the paper with just some plain water (not alot) and that kind of evens out the paper fibers on both sides of the paper and it flattens out. I've done this and it has helped.

Ihaven't tried this, but I wonder if you could mist the front, let it dry, then lightly mist the back and iron it while damp. I have had this problem also. Thanks for the advice.

With warped watercoloring, when dry, I have placed the piece between 2 pieces of text weight paper & ironed. Then put some heavy books on top until piece cools. The text paper seems to absorb some dampness from the watercoloring.

I never thought to try this with perfect pearls. I would wait until it's dry & perfect pearls are set or they will transfer to the text paper. Maybe heat will draw out any remaining moisture cause them to transfer. Worth a try though.

I hate that you have to mist perfect pearls. When originally marketed, that wasn't necessary. But when the perfect medium pads were disintigrating over time, I'm guessing they had to reformulate the ink which didn't set the perfect pearls, hence the need for misting.

My paper and cardstock usually warps when I paint, spray or use mediums on it. I wait for it to dry then put it under my unabridged dictionary over night, and it comes out flat. This works for me even when I have layers of warped paper on a project.

I think you have great advice. I recently tried an experiment using shimmer paint from Stampin' Up with alcohol and reinker and using perfect pearls, water and reinker. I found that the water buckled my paper the most. The alcohol buckled but not as badly and seemed to lay flatter when it fully dried. I was heavy with the misting for this test because that is what I was trying to determine. Everyone recommends using 70% rubbing alcohol with it, I only had 90% so that is what I used, it clogged my sprayer more and I have never clogged a sprayer so I think that is why everyone uses 70%, I think it evaporates to quickly at 90%. I hope that makes sense. But I wasn't really testing 70% vs 90%, I was testing the water vs alcohol. I think I will be using the alcohol and shimmer paint for now on.
I have used tattered angels misters before, they seem to really buckle! Other brands not so bad so it is a trial and error thing!

I used another mist (not perfect pearls), and had the same problem. I have previously done some watercolouring on cheapie white cs using markers and water... then I think I put them under the sears catalogue for weight. I would also bet that different card stocks might buckle more or less, they're all so different.

Another solution would be to adhere the piece to be misted onto the card or backing cardstock BEFORE you mist it, as that keeps the misted paper flat. You might have to mask the background paper before misting...

Tried the shimmer paint from stampinup with alcohol and it also clogged. Then I added a little water and it didn't clog and seemed to mist more evenly.

Is this how you use Pearlex too? It looks really great but I'm not sure if it is like embossing powder or you paint with it.

Pearlex is similar in that it's a mica-based powder but Perfect Pearls has a resin mixed in that means it's permanent when mixed with water. You need an extra ingredient to fix Pearlex (gum arabic). There are recipes around the site if you search the General Stamping forum. I use Perfect Pearls so I'm afraid I don't know the proportions off the top of my head.
