Default McGill punch/Word Window punch

ARGHHH --I must be search-challenged. I *just* read a thread within the last week that someone started about the Word Window punch, & whether she needed it or not (of course she does). In this thread, someone mentioned a similar McGill punch they got at Hobby Lobby, that punches different sizes. I was going to order the WW punch with my SAB order, but wanted to see the McGill so I googled it. I did find it --I think --is it called Retro Word Tags??

If you have the McGill, do you like it?? Do you find it hard to use like the non-lever Marvy's?? Should I just get the WW?? I need to place my SAB order this weekend, so I need to know if I should include the punch, or wait & try to get the other one.

Thanks

(and no, I can't afford both, lol)

I do not like the non lever punches. At all. Very difficult to use. I only buy lever ones now. HTH

I agree with Joan. I always end up throwing out the non-lever type punches because they are too hard to use or get jammed and not as easy to use when I want to punch out an image (punching them upside down isn't as easy as with the lever punches)

Michelle,
Check out this card of AmyR's:

She used the word window punch but made it a custom size. She's got some info on how she did it on her blog. I was going to buy the other one you talked about until I read how she did this. I have the SU word window punch. It totally rocks so if you can do it this way, I think you'll be happier.

I got it because I had a coupon (that I just hated to waste!) fro Hobby Lobby. The one thing that I think would be neat is that you can do some layering. I am sure I will not use it much though because it IS hard to punch and if you want to make different color layers you would have to cut strips of paper and slide them through YKWIM? You could of course make different size layers of the same color and mix and match. I know this all sounds kind of hard to understand. I looked really neat but again without the lever these punches are really a pain to use.

I WILL say what I wish SU would put back in their catty is the Layer Eaze tool for creating layers around punches that have round corners like the WW punch. The Perfect Layers tool is AWESOME but for square edges only (of course the corners can be altered)

I am really bad at describing things but my vote is for the SU WW Punch.

Great idea on making it longer. I have done similar with the tag punch before we got the tag edge punches.

Thanks everyone --I think the WW it is!!

Gina --I did see that post on Amy's blog, but still not exactly sure how she made it longer --maybe I'll understand better when I have the punch in my hands.

You can make them longer or shorter easily with the SU Word Window Punch. I agree that the lever punches are a far better investment.

I have the McGill punch and used it for the first time last night. I haven't conditioned it yet (the whole foil and waxed paper thing) and had a hard time getting the whole punch (not just one or two of the shapes) to get through a sheet of 80# cardstock. With the amount of cutting that punch has to do, I don't think a lever style would make it any easier; it would just make you worry you were going to break the lever. I love this punch, tho!

I have both the retro word punch from HL and the Word Window from SU. I love them both. My preference is the word window; but the other one is good for varying sizes; which is always fun too!

Default WW punch

I am on the fence about getting this punch. The advantage that I could see to buying the WW from SU is that you could use the punch to create a window to the inside of your card. With the McGill retro word window, you couldn't do that unless you want four windows of different sizes. I, too, prefer the lever punches, but have the triple tag punches from McGill and they have always worked well for me. I'm trying to talk myself out of the McGill punch, because they are so darn BIG and storage at my place for things of this sort is limited. Decisions, decisions! :-D

I have the McGill punch - love how you can use it to layer the little tags/ovals... the WW is on my next list - like how you can use it to cut out the windows - not really do-able w/the McGill one since it punches out all 4 at once. I "need" both... i think

Does that help?

Oh.......yes, that makes sense -----I didn't realize there was a hole on the bottom for the paper to go through ----I knew I'd "get" it once I actually saw the punch in person

Thanks!

Ditto to this, but I didn't get my retro word punch from HL.
Other than that, my comment is the same.

Default Stampin Up Layer Eaze Tool

Hey Jackie,

I was curious about this tool, as I love "all things tools", lol. When I looked at the picture, I LOLed. This product has been around for about 20 years by another name, and I already own it. It was originally called: Magic Matter, and looked exactly the same as the SU one with the discs and the blue little mat. The packaging has now changed on the Magic Matter one and does not have the same blue mat, but the tool is still the same, little, flat metal "washer looking thing" that you put on the out of a diecut, put a pencil in the middle, and then it will draw a mat in the same shape as the diecut. You have 3 discs to choose from to vary the size/width of the mat.

I was going to post the links to pictures of both items, so that you can see the similarity, but it will not let me. You can find images for both in Google, though. Hope this helps.

Josie

Hi Josie, and welcome to the forum - after you post a few times you'll be able to post photos. : ) This thread is from 2007 (you can see the dates above each poster's name), so that can explain the many years... and now I'll have to google what tool you're talking about!
