I like Weathered Wood Distress ink for a lightish grey. It may be a slightly blue-toned grey but definitely not purple. There's a swatch on the Ranger site here (bottom row, penultimate one). It's dye ink and has the advantage of staying colour-stable if you add water so you can use it for colouring images as well as for stamping without worrying about whether it's going to break down into its constituent colours as some inks do.
Don't laugh! Studio G in a clear circle container in the $1.50 bin at Michaels.
I'm still on my first container (went back and bought 4 more) and maybe it's just that particular one that is perfect. A light grey pigment, with great coverage, that dries like a dye. My favorite by far!
Thank you all for your input. I have the Weathered Wood and I love it, but I'm looking for something a bit lighter. The Lake Mist has a bit more green than I'm wanting and although I don't have the Pebble color, it still looks darker than I'm wanting. I've never heard of the Studio G inks, so will have to check those out.
Thank you to each of you for your help.

I was going to suggest this one as well. I really like the colour and I think the Studio G inks are under-estimated by a lot of stampers.

I like this one as well, but I find mine is a little on the bluish tinge.
Hero Arts Shadow Ink Soft Shadow Soft Graphite. It will be lighter and smooth out once it dries.
That's a coincidence - I was just coming along to say I've been having a good nosy round the Hero Arts website this morning and noticed the Soft Granite so it's good to see a recommendation for it! It does look a pretty shade of grey (it's here on the HA web site).
Thank you to all for your input... looks as if I have several options to choose from here! LOL Who knew there could be sooo many shades of gray?! Is that a song?! LOL Thanks again all!

I'm also looking for a soft true grey and so far they are all too dark or greeny. I have all the Memento ones and the HA soft granite but they are all too dark. The PTI Soft Stone is light enough but it tends toward the beige tone and I have found it to be somewhat blotchy compared to their other inks. I'm wondering if they are reformulating it since it's been out for awhile. It's OK if I over-stamp a couple of times with MISTI. I'll check out Pebble and keep looking for a very light gray too. Avery Elle Fog pigment ink is also dark. I'm desperate for light gray for baby elephant stamps.

What about SU Slate Gray? Seems pretty light to me.
Simon Says Stamp has quite a few of their own brand of inks in different gray tones. I just ordered the "fog gray". Their inks are made by the same company that makes Hero Arts Inks. I've had really great results with their inks.
Here is a set of three you can purchase... they are also available individually and have cardstock to match.
