Light Table needed for Brass Template??
 

I really would like to try some of those brass templated for dry embossing but I do not have a light table? Can someone please share if they have been able to use them without the light table?

When I was in college, I used my glass kitchen table with a lamp underneath the table. (lamp with no lampshade) To make the lamp the right height, I just stack plastic shoe boxes for the lamp to sit on.

Until you get a light table; take a clear Pyrex Pan and flip it over... stuff the underside with some clear christmas lights... Voila! Light table!

I purchased a light box at either Wal-Mart, AC Moore, or Michael's (sorry, can't remember which ... it's been several years). Anyway ... it was cheap, something like $9.99.

IF you're going to have the backside of your embossed piece hidden anyway, you don't need any type of a light box. Tape down the brass stencil, tape your cardstock down over it and l-i-g-h-t-l-y rub the back of the cardstock with your stylus in the general area of the stencil. You should start to see where the image is - then you just go over it more firmly with the stylus.

You only want to do this if the back of the piece is hidden, though. You'll have scuff marks on the cardstock from where you rubbed it. They don't show thru on the front, though.

I use a steno pad
 

I use mine with no light table. I tape the stencil to the backside of a steno pad -- it's softish cardboard. Then I tape down the cardstock over the stencil. Then I just feel for a beginning spot with my thumb and put the stylus there to start.

Not only is a steno pad way cheaper than a light table, but I can carry it with me while riding a train, waiting in the doctor's office, sitting in a board meeting, et cetera.

I used tape my stencil to my paper, hold it up to a window - during daylight hours, obviously! - and make the great outdoors my light source. I now use a 13x9 glass baking dish and a nightlight on an extension cord. Those small strands of Christmas lights are a great idea, too.
