With regard to SU, it's a Demo who is generally her own customer, or one who may have a few relatives/friends who help her make the quarterly minimums. A Hobby Demo may hold workshops/camps/classes, but she's not in the biz to make the big bucks.
Hobby Demos receive the same Demo-only discounts, presale periods, special offers, and other benefits that all SU Demos enjoy. (There are some achievement-oriented benefits that most Hobby Demos don't qualify for, but that's simply because we've chosen not to produce at those levels.)
Hobby Demos have to buy the same SU Starter Kit that all Demos buy. The Kits occasionally go one sale, and sometimes there's a mini-kit available. The Kit is a one-time purchase and there is no other requirement other than meeting the quarterly minimums ($300 US).
One does not have to declare oneself a particular type of Demo. The terms Hobby Demo and Business Demo aren't even official. SU doesn't push Demos to be any more than they want to be. It's a case of getting out of it what you put in. Personally, I love the discount and other Demo-only benefits and I'm happy with that. SU doesn't bug me to do more than I want, which is fabulous.
