I had wanted the Slice for the longest, but after reading so many mixed reviews I looked into the Silhouette instead. I made a pretty impulsive purchase and now I'm feeling a little buyer's remorse... someone please tell me this machine is better than the Slice... pleasee......
I love my silhouette and use it all the time. You have so much more capabilities in terms of size and flexibility with the silhouette. It's especially great this time of year to make boxes and bags.
I thought I read that Silhouette allows the cutting of any true-type font, I don't recall seeing that about the Slice.
To me, the idea of being able to cut out letters/shapes from any TTF is exactly what I would want.
HTH,
Yes! You end up saving with the Silhouette cos you don't have to buy the cards.
Before the Slice was launched something was mentioned on an introductory video about being about to load your own fonts onto the memory card. But so far I don't seem to see such a feature.
A plus for the Slice would be its portability. But if you don't have to carry it to crops, etc then portability wouldn't be needed.
1. Yes, the machine needs to be plugged in to your computer to cut anything.
But can you get everything ready on the computer BEFORE plugging it into the Silhouette to cut it? I thought that was one of the advantages of this system.

Yes you can get everything ready to cut without being plugged into the machine. I do it all the time. I do a lot of my work sitting in my chair with my family in the evening and then I am able to get up the next morning and cut what I have designed. I absolutely love it, I hope you do too.

Thanks for clarifying my question - that's what I meant to ask.. if I can create and design on my computer using the software without being hooked up to the machine.

Can you cut out boxes and bags templates? Or did you mean use silhouette images to decorate boxes and bags?
gale, i followed your experience with your slice machine on the other thread. i was really hoping for a while that yours was just a slight error. i don't want to deal with the risk of having a faulty machine - it seems prone to flaws from ppl's descriptions. having said that though, i so still have a slice being delivered to my house also because i purchased for a friend. so i think i will get to try both machines side by side pretty soon. i still like the instant gratification of the slice though.. oh wells, can't have everything.
Playing with your new Silhouette should quickly cure any buyer's remorse. I love mine even though I don't use it as often as some- but then I don't craft at all as much as some or as much as I wish I could.
Make sure you check out the Silhouette Users group at Yahoo; Easy Wishbladers is also good and has lots of info for the Silhouette. The groups will really speed up your "learning curve" time.
I've heard great things about the Silhouette, so I don't think you'll regret it. As for the Slice, I was one of the ones having problems, but I'm fine now. The Slice simply has some limitations, but I played with it for a couple of hours last night (and a couple more this morning!) and I am SO glad I didn't impulsively send it back after those first few cuts. I printed off every letter of the alphabet in the smallest size it would cut, and it did great. The smaller cuts are the ones that can have problems. My husband looked at it and figured it out quickly. The blade is a swivel blade, like on a coluzzle knife. And that little blade is not really controlled by the machine itself, kwim? The machine can't tell it to 'swivel this way.' It turns and moves as the arm thingy moves. After at least a hundred cuts, I have only had problems on a handful of cuts. I find it easy to use, and am very happy with it now. Oh, and the only two things I had trouble with were the 1" and 1 1/2" flower and circle. Oh, and the scalloped border of things is different (not as defined) as the nestabilities or SU punch, but I still like it. Especially those 2" or larger. Current favorites are the scalloped square and the postage stamp square! Those came out SO cute, and I can't wait to find a use for them!
I just bought a Silhouette and I love it so far. You can do all of your designs and downloads before you even plug in the usb cord. Save it and come back later and use what you saved. There are a bunch of digital designs that you can buy online and they end up in your library in your program.
I don't think you can go wrong. I bought mine for $177. brand new. On overstock.com. Don't get sucked into the free down load cards and the machine for $300, like they had a store by us. You will never use all of the downloads unless you scrapbook or card make daily. I had buyers remorse too right after I bought it and now am glad I did buy it. Good luck...
scrappykat, the Silhouette has templates for bags and boxes that you can purchase. Then you can make them as big or as small as the cutter will allow. It will only take up to and 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. So consider that.
