I think this thread is a great example of how one size does not fit all, and that we are delightfully varied in what we use and like or don’t like.
Guillotines are my least fave, though I can use them and have one. And while I love and use my hefty Carl cutter most of all, I enjoy small and larger Fiskars that have never let me down.
I’m still getting the feel of the new Creative Memories one. I do love the two “pointer” clear pieces that show you exactly where you’re cutting so you can move the paper accordingly or make accurate mid-paper slits. And changing blades and the deckle blade is neat, as is storage of blades in the back. I’m just not yet zipping along with cutting as fast and easily as with the Fiskars or Carl yet, but I think it’s just a different feel. But it is accurate.
I also have two Friskars trimmers -- 12" x 12" guillotine and slide blade kind. My guillotine trimmer cuts unevenly even if I'm holding the paper down and it's up against the bumpers. It's very frustrating. I actually prefer the slide trimmer because to me, it'a more accurate, but the blades do not last long at all and the blades have gotten to be expensive. I've just learned to live it. I am not buying another trimmer.
And I have a Genesis (sorry no longer made) and it hands down the best cutter ever. There is one very similar to it that I carry with me when I travel to crops. It is a cutterpillar crop. It cuts straight even down to slivers.
That being said you have to make sure your card is flush against the bar. And that the cardstock was cut true to size to begin with.
I have 5 or 6 cutters. My tabletop Fiskars are by far my favorite. I also get MUCH better results with rotary blades. I find you have to have your cutter squared up with your body. One of my first cutters, a Fiskars tabletop is beginning to be very difficult to read, as some of the markings are worn off.
I have had so many problems with the sliding trimmer that I just use guillotine trimmers now, I have the OLDER Tim Holtz trimmer. I find if I put the paper along the bottom edge I get a straight cut as the paper has no where to move but if I put it at the top and don't hold it down firmly it will move. I also have a 12 x 12" guillotine which is over 25 years old and has never missed a beat, you can always sharpen if required by cutting some aluminium foil. good luck !!!
My frustration are the blades dull so quickly. I use the little orange ones you side into your trimmer. Before long I had fuzzy hairy paper edges. Do you?

Are you using the regular blades or the titanium ones? The titanium’s last longer.
Having bought and worn out a few trimmers in my time, I now only go for those with a rotary blade (lasts much better than the little blades which go dull and have to be replaced) and I'm wary of anything where the blade slides up and down a plastic bar, as those tend to wear and go wobbly in time. And if all else fails, I keep a metal ruler and sharp knife for trimming those edges which are not quite even after scoring.
I have a guillotine paper cutter, the kind found in schools. It's a work horses. Heavy duty and "have to be extremely careful" kind so you don't cut off finger tips. It's more than 30 years old and has never been sharpened or blade replaced. I love it and promised it to my DIL when I die! Got mine at an office supply store. Used it in my store for cutting thousands of invite size paper for printing invitations. Now used strictly for my personal use. Betty Betty
I don't like most Fiskar tools and the cutter was horrible. I use a guillotine that I bought at Staples or Office Depot that cuts 12" x 12" paper. It used to light up but light doesn't work. Just stick with a guillotine cutter and don't buy small - you will regret it in the long fun. My X-Acto Guillotine has all of the fine lines you will need for all of your perfect measurement. When putting the paper down on the Guillotine, the ruler holds it into place.
Which model did you buy? Looked on Amazon and there are bunch of them! Thanks...
For mphb: attached is photo of my cutter. It's a Buddy and purchased in early '90s. It's a wood base and sturdy. It locks on right side. I would advise looking at models at office store to get to know what you'd like. My hubby added brown wood on right, to keep it away from the wall.
