What pencil sharpener do you recommend for coloured pencils (we call them pencil crayons in Canada).
I have a small hand held pencil sharpener. Was wondering if an electric pencil sharpener is advised or not. Thought that the only drawback may be that an electric pencil sharpener might sharpen too much of the pencil at once. Thoughts?
There are many different opinions about this, and this is mine from many years of experience. I use a small metal hand-held sharpener with a very light hand. I don't like electric sharpeners for colored pencils because of the very reason you pointed out. Sandy Allnock keeps her points extremely sharp and long, and that's not how I like them. If my points break, I use a little super glue to stick them back in. When I get to the part that's been glued, I sharpen it away. There's not much waste, and I save a pencil. I think you should try a few inexpensive sharpeners and see which one works best for your needs. Happy coloring!
The best sharpeners we have are from Staples in the drafting supplies section. Very sharp blades, long lasting, great for my beloved watercolor pencils.Mary Beth
I have the prismacolor manual pencil sharpener. It has two sharpeners on it depending on how you like your pencils sharpened (one makes a very sharp thin point, the other is sharp but overall more blunt so it shaves off less of the actual color). I have been very happy with it for not breaking pencils and being easy to use.
I broke down and bought one of the sharpeners that was recommended by many here several months ago. It's the T'Gaal. It's a handheld manual sharpener. Has 5 different angles to sharpen. I'm finding that it is much easier to keep a sharp point yet not waste lead.
I am with Diane...the T'Gaal is wonderful. I have a heavy hand, so a super sharp colored pencil is going to distress the paper for me. What I like about this little guy (the sharpener) is the ability to change the angle and not get tons of the color by shaving away the wood. I am probably not making any sense, but I love this sharpener, and the price is right.
I have used a small metal sharpener made by "Cum". But one day I could not find it. I have a small glass with a few sharpeners in it so I just grabbed one. It did even better! It had 2 holes. one for large tips and one for fine tips. I used the fine one. Then I noticed it was made by Revlon for make up. But what the heck, it works great.

Go to Artists Emporium, I went there with my prismas and they recommended a Statdler made in Germany. I have had it for at least 7 years and still sharpens beautifully. They carry it at Mikes but not sure if same quality. Irene
Yayyy - the T'Gaal is the one I recommend! I'm glad you like it!
That said, I do have and use an electric sharpener when I'm working on portraits, because I do a LOT of sharpening and need a higher level of detail so that long high point is important. For cards though, or quicker coloring where I'm not focused on individual hairs (!!) - I love that T'Gaal sharpener, and I use the shortest setting.
I have used a Staples battery operated sharpener for years. I work with children in Sunday School and this is perfect since outlets are not always handy and this is portable for anywhere.
I use a hand held manual sharpener designed for cosmetic pencils (which are quite soft) and it does a perfect job. However, I like the sound of the different angled one as I have found some of my pencils do not have perfectly centered "leads"

They have super sharp blades which prevents twisting the lead inside the pencil-the major cause of breakage. Definitely 5 ⭐️
I use a number of different colour pencils, including watercolour and they are all different sizes (just slightly) but it makes a difference. Is there a one size fits all?

T Gaal seems to work well so far. I have found that about a fourth of my 150 colored pencil set has leads that are not centered. I can tell by looking at the ends and I know that is trouble down the road. I'm disappointed about this but it's too late to do anything about it. I'm hoping this pencil sharpener will be gentle enough to keep them from breaking.
hello, i am really late to the game but i was researching this question, and i found the brass mobius & Ruppert brass pencil sharpener. I just purchased on amazon for $8.26.
It looks like it might work, and you can replace the blade as well. we will see.
Just seen this thread, and this is the pencil sharpener I bought from Amazon. Called TGaal, you can 'dial' the sharpness you want, from gently rounded, to almost needle like! I'm loving it for that control.
