question from a new embosser

hi, i just got an epic 6 embosser form the thrift store, which came with no platforms. after searching the web for platforms to fit i decided to hack my own, using stuff i mostly had already. i feel like its working pretty well but since i have just started with this hobby i only have 2 embossing folders that i bought from Joanns (parklane). one goes thru well and has a good emboss on the paper, the other one not so great. have you found that embossing folders vary in their results, even within same brands?

Welcome to Splitcoaststampers. I have several embossing folders (EF) that don't behave themselves. Generally a quick fix is to add a shim or two. I have a few pieces of cardstock cut the same size as my plates and store them all together. It is trail and error as to how many shims are needed. Hope this info helps.

I agree with Susie - usually a shim (or two) will fix it. And yes, folders vary from manufacturer to manufacturer or even (as you found) within the same one. Trial and error is pretty much the only way to tell. Word of caution: don't try to force them through - if it's too hard to move through, then back it out and try a thinner shim (I've used cardstock instead of cardboard - or even copy paper).

Sometimes, the folder is too strong and cuts the paper! In that case, a (fine) spritz of water loosens the paper fibers just enough to not tear the paper. Another idea as you start your creative journey...
