I am looking at finally getting an ATG 714 dispenser. I am not sure which tape to get, the 924 or 987. I am a card maker so don't need the acid free tapes. Which do you prefer? I'm not really sure of the difference between the two.
The acid free tape is #908. I don't know what the other numbers are. Make sure that you get tape that is only 1/4" wide. The 714 only holds the 1/4" tape.
Does the 987 tape stick well? I don't want my cards to fall apart like they are doing with the monoadhesive. It said something about the amount of pressure applied determines the stickability. Not sure I will be consistent with the pressure and I really don't want things to come apart. Will they 924 be better?
I am so glad you asked this question, I am getting ready to place my first ATG order & I also don't need the #908 acid free. I am very confused about how well the other tapes stick! I noticed that the #987 has lots more tape on each roll (60 yards compaired to 36 yards) so I am wondering if the tape is thinner or weaker.
I buy the rolls that are 60 feet. Not sure what number that is. I have been using the same adhesive for about 2 years now and have never had anything fall apart. It is super sticky.
I have only used the 924, and it's terrific! Nothing has come apart in the 18 months that I've been using it. I'm not familiar with the 987 and am so satisfied with the 924 that I'll probably never try it...
Here's what the Framing Supplies site says about the tapes:
Tape 987 Bond strength is dependent upon the amount of adhesive-to-surface contact developed. Firm application pressure helps develop better adhesive contact and improve bond strength.
Tape 924 Tape 924 is ideal for bonding a wide variety of similar and dissimilar materials such as metals, glass, wood, papers, paints, and many plastics. Some application ideas include: Mounting promotional items, posters, etc.
The 924 that is 60 yards is the 1/2 inch, which won't work in the 714 red gun. If that's the one you want to use, you need the 36 yd one because it's 1/4 inch. It's the 908 that is acid free. If you are using it on photos, that's the one you should use.
Thanks for the info. I go back and forth on them so still don't know what I will end up buying. Maybe I will just get a few of each and then decide for myself!!!
Armel has the best prices, BUT is currently out of ATG tape and the guns! So the next best place seems to be framingsupply.
I ordered from framingsupplies last week because Armel's page said that the scrapbooking offer was not available. Turns out framingsupplies is out of 924 1/4 x 36 too.... and 3M (the manufacturer) is out as well so it's about a 2 week wait. Framingsupplies does have 908 1/4x 36 in stock.
I just ordered the ATG 714 and 987 tapes from Crop and Stick and hopefully will get me order soon! Thanks for all the input! I'm really excited to be getting a better adhesive that will actually hold my cards together!
I used the acid free tape first, but on this last order switched to the regular. The regular seems more stringy. It leaves "tails." I'm going back to the acid free next time I order.
