I have this trimmer. I got it about 5 - 7 years ago and paid about $275. Not sure. At the time it seemed ridiculous. but I had already gone through about 5 trimmers, to the tune of over $200. So I took a major leap of faith and got it.

I'm still using the same blade. It cuts steel on steel (no plastic) so it lasts a very very long time. My 16" is way to big for my needs and I wish I had purchased a smaller one, but having the light to see underneath the paper when I cut is a great feature.

So, I'm not sure I would want to shell out $390 now, but I can say it rocks.

No, it's really $399. I have one. It's one of the best scrappy investments I've ever made. I absolutely LOVE it. It's such a quality cutter. It's the last one you'll ever need.

dang I want one but eeek that's a lot of money.

I sent my DH the link and put it on my Christmas list. :D

If I don't get it for Christmas, I'm ordering it for myself in Feb, LOL~

I just received mine last week and I love it. I wish I had heard about Genesis before buying my other trimmers (including but not limited to Fiskars, Carl and SU versions). If I had, then the $390 would not have seemed so outrageous. This is a quality product.+

I like really good gear. I buy quality tools. Hopefully I'll be able to see this at a show somewhere and check it out. I may end up lusting after it. I wish there were a light bar feature for the 12" trimmer.

The thing is... a Genesis Trimmer lasts forever. A lot of people have been using the same Genesis Trimmer for 40 years -- FORTY years!! There are no plastic arms that break and no rubber mats that have to be replaced... Genesis cutter wheels last for YEARS, not weeks or months, and Genesis grid lines (laser etched in metal) don't wear off -- ever. And Genesis cuts are crisp, STRAIGHT and square.

How long do plastic paper cutters last? Months, maybe a year? How many cheap plastic cutters do people end up buying over the years? The cost of cheap, basically disposable Chinese-made plastic paper cutters (and their often-replaced parts) can really add up over time.

When you look at the grand total spent for multiple disposable cutters, a ONE-time investment in an all-metal, hand-built, made-in-the-USA trimmer that will cut well for a lifetime -- a tool used every day, on every project -- makes a lot of sense!

Just my (admittedly prejudiced) opinion... The printing company I do business with has a 30-year-old Genesis Trimmer they use every day. I've used my Genesis for 11-1/2 years now and can't imagine cutting without it!

Where do you live, ceramicat? If you're on the West Coast, you can try a Genesis Trimmer at the CHA Craft Supershow in Anaheim, California, in January!

Yeah, I don't think so. I've had my purple Fiskars trimmer for about 7 years, and it's still going strong. And I paid only $10 for mine when I redeemed a key tag at an lss. For $390, it had better do the cutting for me. For those of you who can afford it, though, I wish you many years of enjoyment with it.

I think I may just be rough on tools. I had a Fiskars that I bought for about $15; track warped and cuts got wonky. Then I spent $55 on a Dahle 507 trimmer; great until I dropped it and loosened the bottom guide and all my cuts were crooked. Then I spent $15 on a Cutterpede; broke the arm off at the hinge :(. Then $15 on another Cutterpede (pink); has never given me a straight cut, EVER. Then $90 on a Carl rotary; great for multiple sheet cuts; bit of a pain with the lock down rail for many small cuts. Then $50 for the SU/Tonic table top trimmer; love it but hard to see exactly where the cut is going to be and I'm an "eye ball it" sort of crafter frequently.

So grand total of $240 so far on trimmers over the past 8 years and still not perfectly satisfied. Given that total, I think investing the $390 in a Genesis will be a good deal for me. Now to wish real hard that Santa brings it or start saving my pennies. :mrgreen:

Is the Genesis Trimmer company out of business? They seem to no longer have a website.

I mean the company that makes the trimmer, not just sells it....or is that Bonnie's Best for both?

Alright, I'm sold. I want one! I have 10 trimmers in my sb room and have yet to find one that cuts straight all the time. Most of them go to my kids when they are doing projects.
This is on my 2010 'me' list. I love the edge light!! These 45+ yr old eyes need all the help they can get! :-)

Thanks for a really tempting idea though. I love California. We'd probably stay in San Diego and drive up for the show if we could go.:)

I've owned the grey basic Fiskars, a larger purple Fiskars with the metal face plate. I bought a Carl at a show in Atlanta, and several different Carls at a scrapbook yardsale, I have a Purple cow guillotine, and another Purple cow in a travel case. I've had a full size cutterpede and the small cutterpede ( I thought it was the size that irritated me about using the cutterpede, I was wrong) I have one of the big Fiskars with the circular blade. The only cutter I consistently still use is the Fiskars with the metal face plate. I don't know if it just the way I think about things, but cutters people absolutely rave about I cannot get comfortable using. I would definitely have to try another cutter before I buy one.

I have to think though, if the Genesis ends up being the last cutter I ever buy, the price is a good deal.

It's Bonnie's Best for both. As I understand it, she bought the equipment from Genesis and so she is now the manufacturer.

I got a carl rotary cutter and I love it. Prior to the carl, I had a fiskars (the $28 or so version) - have had it for at least 5 years and it works great with paper, but I also need to cut heavy material and large sizes and small sizes and the carl is just perfect for me.

Thank you for the information. Bonnie was kind enough to PM me that she her company does indeed make the trimmer now.

Why don't you just email Bonnie and go see her in her warehouse. The warehouse is in Atlanta. If you can't go during the week, you can ask Bonnie to see the Genesis on a weekend. I asked, went to try it out and left with my new Genesis roughly a month ago. It is real easy to find her place.

Bonnie was kind enough to send me a PM at PTI's forums and she was very respectful.

I guess my thinking is this:

Even if I pay $39 for a fairly good trimmer every two years, it would take me 20 years to spend what I'd spend for the Genesis. (and that's every two years!... my trimmers usually last five or six years)

That means I'd be 62 years old before I run out of trimmers.

However, for those who use a trimmer faithfully and REALLY get a lot of use out of their trimmers, I think this is a great investment. :)

For those who have a Genesis, how are the cuts? Very straight?

I ask because I recently got a Carl DC 210 and I REALLY like it... but every now and then I wonder how STRAIGHT it cuts? :)

I've had my Genesis trimmer for at least 25 years. It still cuts straight and I have never replaced anything on it. My blade is a little rusty due to being used in my darkroom and getting wet and to be honest I didn't treat it like gold and it still works perfect. It has made millions of cuts and the blade is still sharp. I believe it will last another 25 years. I would love to have the guide bar though. I'm keeping my Genesis trimmer!!

I love California, too! My son lives in San Diego and is driving up to help us unload and set up for the Supershow.

No, but we visit there frequently. (Inlaws are there) It's sweet of you to offer! As soon as I can, I'll make some "me" time on a trip down to come by.

I have had my "Geny" for 4 years I think.. I LOVE it it is the most Awesome tool I own.
Bonnie was the most wonderful person to deal with. I waited 15 months for the trimmer and saved up for it. Best $$ I ever spent. True straight cuts every time~

Well, I'm not close to either Atlanta nor CA :( But I agree, I think I need to try a cutter before buying, especially one that costly...seems like several people (in this thread and another one about cutters) like the rotary Fiskars but I HATE mine. You have to push really hard on it to get it to cut, and if I miss a spot and go back over it (without moving anything), it doesn't cut in the same line! It looks bowed to me, too, like the blade is moving inward instead of just across the page. I use it only for rough cutting, not final edges.
So, I obviously can't go by the experiences of others :mrgreen:

I cannot even begin to tell you how many people told me how wonderful the cutterpede was and how accurate it cut, etc. Not for me! So I can sympathize!

Absolutely worth every penny!

I've made the decision to buy the 12" next month!! Gotta wait for the funds with Christmas and all this month... I can't wait!!!!


* I should add I've owned my MM trimmer for almost 2 years and the grid lines are finally wearing off. I've liked this trimmer and it seems like the Genesis is very similar in design only much much better?

Can anyone tell me how heavy the Genesis is? I need to be able to move it to work, my work desk is about 2.5 feet by 18 inches (that doesn't include both beds where I lay everything out, the pull out tray on my computer desk that holds stacks of whatever, and the chair that everything leans up against, and the bar stool that ends up holding things that don't include my butt. LOL!)

scrapcat I have the MM trimmer and when my gridlines wore off, I contacted MM as I heard they were replacing them with a newer model that didn't have the wearing off problem. I sent them a picture of the trimmer via email and they replaced it for free, even paid the shipping. I love that trimmer, especially the fact that you dont need to replace the blade,and I think it cuts great.

I have a smaller rotary Fiskars and i LOVE it. It cuts straight and I have never had an issue.
It sells for $70 but I paid much much less at the Fiskars warehouse sale here.
It is the best I have use so far so I will stick with mine.
The Genesis is nice but the cost is not for me.

I was sooo tempted but can't seem to get myself to spend that much money on it. I waited over 2 years on the waiting list and when one was finally available, the price had jumped up by $75-$100!! I just couldn't justify that. For me, I have had a tonic guillotine for three years and it works lovely. And I do special orders of 100 or more items so this thing has seen a LOT of cuts in that time and it still cuts the same as when I first got it (once you learn the trick of holding down the guide with your non cutting hand).

The Genesis is still on my wish list but I think wishing is all I can do with it!
