Default Ecraft or Silhouette SD?

I never would have looked at the silhouette, but I noticed there is a new silhouette sd. The SD caught my eye. I realize if I got the Silhouette instead of the ecraft that I'd have to put up with the mat, and the smaller screen. But I could take it to crops and use anything I had downloaded onto the sd cards, right? Images, fonts, whatever I wanted? Without a laptop?

Since I started the wait for the ecraft I realized I may have been a bit hasty in overlooking what's already out there. I want to make sure I'm not ignoring something that's already great before I spend that kind of money on the ecraft.

Thanks!

I bought my SD on ebay for 130.00 including shipping and a bunach of extras came with it all new in package. I haven't tried using just an sd card with it I have the program on my laptop, I like the way it cuts. ( I have a cricut baby bug and expression, slice, sizzix, revolution) I have havethis one set up all the time since it is so small

I hope I'm not going off subject, but I am so curious as to what lauraching thinks about the Silhouette vs. Cricut Expression? Also, do you use software (SCAL or DS or both or other) with your Expression?

Thanks so much,

Jennifer

I've been keeping up with the eCraft news (I'm in a Yahoo group and also get the newsletter) and I'm not impressed so far. The eCraft Pro software, which is necessary to use/create your own files and to use TTFs, was $300. When there was very negative feedback about that, the price was lowered to $160 -- still twice what SCAL and MTC cost.

Because there is no mat, the diecuts are perforated, so they need to stay attached to the paper until you remove the paper from the machine. The chads/tags are noticeable. Some people will feel the need to trim/sand them.

The designs on the design cards look very "dingfont-ish" to me. The majority are like what you'd get from a punch or a die.

On the plus side, I like SD cards vs cartridges. They're so much easier to store. I also think the fact that the eCraft can cut any length (banners!) is pretty cool.

Overall, I think this would be a great machine for a school. SD cards are easy to store. The cuts are not time-consuming paper-piecing like a Cricut. A school is the perfect place for a cutter that can make banners. Chads would not mean as much in a school atmosphere as they would to those of us who are persnickety in our personal crafting.

Thanks for the info on the Craftwell machine. I haven't found that much on it but the paper feeding without cutting sheets sounded really good to me. Now that I know it perforates the pieces instead of actually cutting them out, it isn't the machine for me. I'll just stay with my Silhouette and its cutting sheets. It does an outstanding job. I'll just have to deal with the cutting sheets.

The perfs/tags/chads are pretty far apart, but they are there -- they have to be. There is nothing for the diecuts to hold onto but the surrounding paper (no sticky mat).

It makes sense now that I've seen the pics and all. I guess I was hoping there was some new magical system that gave beautiful cuts and didn't need a mat!

Just an update - you can cut without the tabs by putting a piece of card behind the one you want to cut - I have even cut without tabs and forgotten to do that and its been fine! The card underneath isnt sticky or anything - and it doesnt get cut through itself - just kinda stabalises the piece you are cutting.

The software isnt up to much at the moment - though they are working on it now - I dont, personally, have too many issues with it - I work in inkscape and then just import the svg - sometimes this is glitchy, most of the time it works just fine

Love it love it love it...oh and I had a wishblade (like the robo) and it hasnt been out the cupboard since I bought the ecraft

Default Another reason why i love this forum! <3

Like i said before.... i think of a question, and its already answered here..! <3

So, i just saw the ecraft online recently.... and i still havent got my silhouette SD, but i want to get it because it seems to have the most intricate cuts so far, plus, it can trace and convert any images without being restricted to cartidges!

I dotn suppose the ecraft does that without the really exprensive software you guys are talking about? some of the features seem to look great, but how much is for anyway?

I just got a Silhouette SD a few weeks ago and I LOVE it. I am amazed what this machine and it's software can do and am looking forward to discovering more as I use it.

I've read on several blogs that there is a 12" Silhouette in the works.
