Does this exist?
 

I'm looking for a tool that will allow me to cut an image a little larger for layering.
I have the Perfect Layers tool for straight cuts.
For instance, If I punch a large leaf, is there something that will easily allow me to either cut or trace a little larger? Maybe an 1/8" or 1/4".
I seem to remember something that looked like a little circle with a hole in it that allows you to trace almost any shape.
I have many punches, which I really like. And sometimes would like to layer the shapes.


I'm talking about leaves, flowers, butterflies, not the basic circle, square, oval.
I've recently gotten some spellbilders, that that solves the problem for those shapes.

I know there is a brass 'wheelie' (?) tool in the quilting section. It is used to make the seam allowance for hand appliqu� images. Sorry, don't know the actual name but you might look in JoAnn online so you will sound more knowledgeable when asking at a store.

The only other thing I can think of would be that tool in a kids geometry set - the one that holds the pencil in on side and has a sharp point on the other side. You could put a pencil in, and then carefully (so as to not pierce your paper) drag the sharp side around the edge of your image - the pencil will then leave a mark on your paper for you to hand cut it.

Or you could just eyeball it if you have good scissor skills (unlike myself, who as a leftie, can't cut a straight line to save my life!)

SU used to have those little round discs. . .

That's where I saw them. I'll check the catalog. I couldn't find it on Joann's web site.

I think it's called a "seam allowance disc" and is made by Dritz.

The tool that SU used to (yep retired) have was called Layer Ease. Consisted of four "washers" with holes in the center for your pencil. came in 1/4", 1/2" and two other sizes. Still have mine in my craft room...I use the 1/4" fairly often. I have seen it in the past at Michael's under a different name but not recently.

I saw a tip for adding a 1/4" seam allowance to patterns that might work for paper shapes.

Tape two "octagon" sided pencils together. Run one pencil around the edge of your shape, and the other one will trace a line 1/4" from it.

You could do this on the back side of your shape and then hand cut the "shadow" shape.

"Magic Matter" was the name... I LOVE mine, and still use it A LOT!! The Quilter's tool is where the idea came from...the Magic Matter was sold like 6-8 yrs ago...

Actually, there is a retired product from Stampin' Up! (retired like 10 years ago) that looked like a little silver washer. You would put your pencil tip in the tool and roll it around the outer edge of a cut out piece onto paper and then cut the layer out.

Thank you, I have ordered the tool. I tried the pencil trick. Didn't work too great for me. My hands aren't steady enough.

I don't have a solution for you exact problem, but I wanted to pass along this tip for a similar situation with die cuts. This works with dies that have the cutting edge inside of the outer edge of the dies. You can trace the die itself and cut it out to create a slightly larger frame for your die cut.

This doesn't work with punches of course, but I thought I'd pass it along anyway. Good luck!
