First let me say that I love my ATG enough that I put up with little annoyance. Having said that, this is very frutstrating to me! I have watched the video (more than once) about loading the gun with tape so I am confident that I am doing it correctly but without fail, halfway thru every roll, this is what happens. The "waste" part of the roll starts creeping up and becoming a mess so I have to pull it off and start the loading process again. I can't for the life of me figure out WHY it does this. Just wondering if anyone else has this happen?
Mine does this too sometimes... even when it is loaded correctly. Also, I have to watch the video everytime I change the tape. I can never remember how to get it on right, LOL!
Nope, mine only did that when I did not have the tape spool pushed all the way down into the tab. I have been through over 20 rolls and it has worked fine. Have you tried to adjust the tension?
I've never had this happen, but from your picture, I have my waste roll tape running the other direction, i.e. clockwise. I could be wrong, but yours looks like it's going counter-clockwise. Maybe this is the problem--don't know, but it could be worth a try.
To adjust the tension, you just fiddle with the screws that hold the rollers in. I think I just played with the one on the take up reel. Don't over do it though. Just try a little turn at a time.
Terri, I think it does not have to do with the direction of the waste paper reel. If the gun dispenses the tape by winding clockwise, then the paper water reel HAS to go counter-clock wise because the gun works on gears that run opposite of one another, right? Are you sure you have the tape roll loaded and pushed down into the tab at the bottom? It looks like you do...but just wanted to be sure.
I am off to bed but I hope you get your mystery solved pronto! If you can't figure it out, I would call or email them at Tape Depot. Their customer service is good from what I remember.
Okay, here is a pic from their website...I do not see that piece on this one and it looks exactly like mine.
The picture the other SCS member posted is the real ATG gun. You own the one that the tape depot makes not scotch. The tape guns are completely different. I also own the tape depot brand atg gun and like it however I too have probems with mine. Oh and mine does not have a piece that goes over the spool where the used tape is either.
I contacted tape depot about this problem and they said to just take the used liner off and rethread the machine and start over. My tape depot gun does not have this lock on the back post.
My ATG from framing supplies does have the lock for the used tape.

That is exactly what I have to do...for every roll, I have to actually wrap it around twice. It is annoying and my only complaint about this gun, which I could not live without. My very first ATG was a 3M brand...I opened and closed it enough times that the hinges finally broke (plastic). It still works though, so I could always go back to that one!
My atg gun is the same as yours...and I have the same problem. I thought mine was missing a piece too. Now that I read the thread it seems not. I do the same as what tapedepot tells you....I just rethread it. It is very anoying, since I waited for the hype to come down on the guns as well as the price. Bummer, best of luck!
In short, YES! Which is why it is hiding in the bottom of my junk drawer. :(. I bought it as a spare when I had to send my Scotch 714 in to be replaced. What a waste of money. I wholeheartedly wish I had spent the $25 more to get another real ATG. Lesson learned for sure.
Wow...well I have not had an issue at all with my ATG from Tape Depot. Like I said before, my take up reel did that until I loaded it correctly. Once I had that tape spool pushed down into the tab, mine worked perfectly. Sorry you are having issues!

Terri, my ATG gun fell down the stairs and the hinges broke, I just put a piece of duct tape over it and It works fine. (it is the Scotch brand)
the first thing I thought when you showed a picture was that you were missing the locking piece too. I forgot to put mine back on when i first loaded my gun and it had that same problem.
Yes, mine did that also. It also had several other quirks. I finally sprung for a scotch one and let me tell you, what a difference! I waste so much less tape. The tape goes on the paper each time and I am far less frustrated. I threw my other away. I actually considered backing over it with my car

and chance having to buy a new tire?
I actually did that to my glasses when I was 16 and got contacts. Of course I didn't realize I would need the glasses at night LOL!

Have you contacted 3M about that? Maybe they can sen you a new one. When I was having trouble with my ATG they were wonderful to work with. I love my ATG!!!
You might have a problem with your adhesive rolls if they came from the same box. Mine did that, when I looked at the rolls they were not quite round, they had a little burble in them that made it do that. I have the Scotch gun and got totally frustrated having to rethread it when it got too full. got a different box of tap rolls and viola, no problems any more.

Yeah I felt the love for the apple green one but ordered the good ole yellow at a much better price from the framing supplies place yesterday. I sure hope it's in stock. I need it like yesterday.
I also have that same gun, and YES I have the same problems and YES I have watched the video, and YES I also thought there was a part missing, but found out that part is on the Scotch brand red gun. I thought I was saving money HA! It looks like I will be SAVING UP money to buy the Scotch brand gun for a replacement. I am considering calling the Tape-Depot and seeing if they can refund me my money! So ANYONE OUT THERE CONSIDERING THIS TAPE DEPOT GUN, DON'T!!!!! Learn from our misfortunes and disappointments. Buy only the Scotch brand gun, and be happy.
I just now went online to the Tape Depot, called the 888 number, got a recording to email my concern. I did just that, and told them how disappointed I am with their gun. I will let you know if they "stick it" (lol)to me, or if I get any help from them.

Cyndi
cyndi that is the gun that takes the 1/2 inch tape unless you buy the converter too. Just an fyi. I would hate for you to get your pod (wait til you see how it is packaged) and not be able to use it.
I had some issues with the ordering from framing supplies and ended up canceling that order. I have it on back order from Cropandstick.com. I did get the 714. Who knows why I said the yellow one but I did go back and double check my back order Whew !!
She e-mailed me and said that 3M can't get a component for it from China is why they are on back order for so long. Must be the same China Co. that makes the 12 x 12 Cricut mats lol
Another person who bought The Tape Depot ATG 50 to use during the 3M problems with the 714. When I had problems, I called The Tape Depot and talked to someone who was very helpful. Got the waste liner problem resolved but when my replacement 714 came, The Tape Depot ATG went back into its box. It was working fine but I had problems with the positioning of the tape on the front roller - tape sits on the right (I am right handed) and the gun blocked my view of the roller so was never able to get the tape where I wanted. Gave this ATG to a friend and she loves it. She scrapbooks mostly and likes to be able to use the 1/2" tape.
My vote is get the 3M ATG. I think the difference in cost is worth your sanity and lack of frustration. I'm not sorry I spent more $$$ on my 3M ATG!
Another thing to anyone who likes the different color of the ATG housing. There is spray paint that can be used on plastic so maybe this is a way to change the color. (Check You Tube - I think I might have seen a video there. There definitely is one there of a woman changing the color of the housing of her Cricut to pink.) I cleaned a Goodwill 'find' - black swivel CD holder - and spray painted it celery green. They have this paint at Home Depot, etc. but also at Michael's/JoAnn's.
Good luck on whichever ATG you choose. This is definitely the way to go to save $$$ on adhesive.
