cuttlebug AND cricut-too much?

I have the Cricut Expression and I love it. I just bought the Cuttlebug, but I'm having second thoughts.

I was lucky enough to be given Michael's gift cards by several people this Christmas and I used them to get the Cuttlebug and a few embossing folders. (They let me use the 50% off coupon, too, so I got the Cuttlebug for $40!)

Anyway, since I bought it, I've been regretting the purchase. I don't know if I'll use it. I don't think I'll buy any cutting dies, but I like a lot of the embossing dies.

I bought it on Monday and still haven't opened it.

Should I return it, do you think? If I do, I will have about $55 to play with from the return. What should I get instead?

Thanks for any input!

Helen

BTW, I didn't include the purchase in my stamp to spend totals in my signature line since I was using gift cards. :)

dougnat 01-01-2009 07:57 AM

NO!!! You need them both!! keep them and love them :)
Seriously, the cuttlebug can do such different things like embossing ect.

jent 01-01-2009 08:21 AM

Give it a try

-- bet you'll LOVE it. Its a wonderful little machine especially for embossing and at 50% you simply can't beat that!!!!

cjbapp 01-01-2009 08:25 AM

Oh gosh...I have both and could never give one up...open it and start playing!!! LOL

You NEED this if you want to do dry embossing, or nestabilities!!

Caroline K. 01-01-2009 08:39 AM

Just look at these galleries using the embossing and also Heart Prints gallery, you'll absolutely keep that Cuttlebug.

natlhol 01-01-2009 08:49 AM

Wow! I guess the Cuttlebug has a loyal fan base!:D

I have fiskars plates and have never used them. I'm afraid I won't use the Cuttlebug either. I know that you can use the fiskars in the Cuttlebug, though.

Nesties, too? It seems to me that Nesties would be another addiction. Maybe I should stay away from them!

Thanks for everyone's quick input!

jessicaluvs2stamp 01-01-2009 08:54 AM

the cuttlebug is WONDERFUL!!!! you will seriously be addicted once you start using it. I absolutely love the embossing folders and just got my first set of nesties and am in love with them too. It is so easy to use and the dies and embossing folders are really reasonable. You can't go wrong with a cuttlebug especially at half price. Just my opinion :)

ladybugstamper2 01-01-2009 09:12 AM

Hi!
I don't have a Cuttlebug, but I have a lot of the Cuttlebug Embossing Folders. I was so excited to learn that I could use my Original Sizzix and the Embossing folders. The folders are so much fun, they add a great background to the Cricut Die cuts, and the also make great impressions on the die cuts too. What sold me on the embossing folders is how easy they are to use.

Keep the Cuttlebug and the folders. I purchased all my folders with the 40% off coupons, it was sort of addicting, go to the store every two weeks and lucking into a new folder.

I haven't bought any folders in 2009, LOL!!!!

buggainok 01-01-2009 09:51 AM

Oh you must keep the Cuttlebug! Here's the link to the Heart Prints gallery with over 300 cards made with Cuttlebug embossing folders. This should inspire you:

pjw2855 01-01-2009 09:59 AM

Helen.....If you purchased the Cuttlebug at Michaels, you will not get the full value back with a return. They keep a percentage.

No one care truly say what you like or will use, but I know I love my BIGkick and would not give it up for anything. I have a Cricut and Expression also. I have the Cuttlebug, but now use the BIGkick for machine embossing and die cutting of those dies. I just feel more comfortable with the larger machine.

If you really feel you would not use it, then go and return it. The money you will loose in the process may not be a big deal to you if you don't use the machine.

Patti

amybeene 01-01-2009 10:05 AM

don't return it!!! i have both and i love them both equally...i use to cricut to cut things out and the cuttlebug mostly for embossing...LOVE them both!!

icela 01-01-2009 10:16 AM

cuttlebug and cricut

Oh my dear, do not return it. I bought the cuttlebug 1st I have half of their embossers and dies. I love the emoss/die sets. I have 4 of them.

I have the cricut which my husband bought for me this summer just because. and I could not live without that one either.

I don't tell too many people this but I own over 200 punhes....LOL talk about a crafting nut.

natlhol 01-01-2009 11:05 AM

Ok, you guys have convinced me!

That heart prints gallery is amazing! Thanks for the link. I'll have to start a wish list of folders that I want. I bought the Thank you embossing one, and the swirls one when I bought the machine.

I didn't know that Michaels would keep a percentage of the price if I returned it. Even though I got it on sale, I'd hate to lose money on it. Thanks for that info, too.

I think I'll break it out and start playing today.

Thanks!

Helen

Nancy1970 01-01-2009 11:10 AM

I LOVE my Cuttlebug and would never take it back! The embossing folders are fabulous and I LOVE using my Nestabilities in there

I just got an Expressions for Christmas and I know I will need to make the effort to use it for the first little while.... the same as you with your Bug.... but it will be worth it in the end!

Stop second guessing yourself and GO PLAY!

I think that is misinformation about Michaels keeping a percentage on returns. I have always gotten a return amount that was equal to the amount on my sales slip when I returned anything. They will not give you the full price of the item if you used a coupon, of course. Just the amount you actually paid.

pjw2855 01-01-2009 11:58 AM

Ladies......Unless their policy has very recently changed, read the back of your receipt for return policy.

Patti

anng97 01-01-2009 12:24 PM

I wouldn't return it. But then again, I have the Cricut Express, Cuttlebug, AND the Sizzix Bigkick. I love them all!

Michelle My Belle 01-01-2009 07:02 PM

Just chiming in to say, I hope you keep it! I swore I would never own a die cutter of any kind...well I now have both and use them VERY regularly! Enjoy!!

crafty1021 01-01-2009 07:15 PM

Just to chime in...I have a Cricut, a Cuttlebug, and a Revolution with a Big Shot and a Slice on the way. They are all a little different and I don't regret any of my purchases. Ultimately, you are the only one who can decide if the money you spent is worth it to you. My vote? Keep it if you'll use it!!

Just recently I think that if you do not have your receipt then they keep a percentage of the price, unless it is on sale - then they give you the sale price back. As long as you have a receipt you should be fine. With that said, I would definitely keep the Cuttlebug. I had this first and just got my Cricut for Christmas this year, but am still using the good old Cuttlebug too!

Cherry314 01-02-2009 04:56 AM

CuttleBug is a great tool!

I not only use my CuttleBug for dry embossing I use it to cut using my nestibility templates. It works great. It is easy enough that my grandaughter (seven years old) can use it, and she has.

natlhol 01-02-2009 08:03 AM

OK, after reading everyone's enthusiasm for the cuttlebug, I opened it and played yesterday--and today too, I might add!

I bought 2 folders that I played with, plus the set it came with. I'm in the process of making 20 thank you cards with the thank you embossing folder that I bought when I bought the machine.

I also played quite a bit with the fiskars texture plates. I used a sandwich with a mouse pad. The results are more subtle, but still pretty. We are going to Lowe's later today and I think I might get a rubber plumber's gasket while we are there to see if that works better.

Finally, last night, I went online and ordered 4 more folders from Cutters Creek. I just got an email that they shipped this morning.

Just what I needed: a new crafting addiction! But, I'm enjoying playing with it and so is my 10 year old daughter. Thanks everyone for your input!

Another person here who has BS, Cuttlebug and Cricut. Would not part with any of them. I did finally give my friend who is new to papercrafting my old red Sizzix...only because I wanted the space...lol

icela 01-02-2009 10:58 AM

cuttlebug

Helen,

Go to the cuttlebug website provo craft and click on the sandwich matrix.

I used the plumbers gasket and I now use the matrix listed on provo craft.

click on downloads and then the sandwich matrix.

I buy almost all my dies and embossing folders from ohMyCrafts some are 3.49 each when they are on sale.

split-pea 01-02-2009 12:15 PM

So glad you decided to give it a try. I have a cricut & a cuttlebug too & I love them both. I already had all the fiskar plates & hardly used them, now with the bug I love them. I use the plummers gasket with the fiskars plates. I like the impression it gives.

I checked the website on provocraft (I'm not sure if that was the right one) but fiskars templates weren't listed on the sandwich matrix.

I'll check OhMyCrafts for folders. Thanks for the tip!

I love both the Cricut and the Cuttlebug. I use them both, alot!

Adalia Disa 01-02-2009 02:02 PM

Michael's Return Policy - typed word for word from the back of a recent receipt (Dec 27th)

"If you're not satisfied with your purchase, return it in its original condition with a sales receipt within 60 days. Returns after 60 days will be issued a merchandise credit. Returns, if purchased with a check, require a 10-day waiting period. Without a receipt, no refunds will be given on seasonal and clearance merchandise. For everyday merchandise returned without a receipt, a merchandise credit will be issued based on the promotional price or everyday price less 20%. Valid ID is required. Custom floral arrangements are not refundable, but we will rework the arrangement within a 7-day period."

As you can see, they only deduct a percentage if you don't have your receipt. This is to simply prevent people from buying things on sale, and returning them for full price. On a regular return with your receipt you get 100% back.
I posted this just to stop any confusion, not to be mean or anything. I used to work at michaels, so the thought of them keeping a percentage was confusing to me, as I know that when I worked there that wasn't the case.

thescrapmaster 01-02-2009 02:06 PM

I have a big shot and a cricut and love both. I think you should try it out, the embossing folders are awesome.

Julie in Indy 01-02-2009 02:09 PM

I'd vote to keep the Cuttlebug - if you use it for embossing only, it's a great little machine.

p.s. I own a Wishblade (automatic cutter), a Quikutz, a Zip 'e Mate, a Sidekick, the old red Sizzix machine and a Cuttlebug....they are all useful.

Wow! You must have a big crafting space! :-D

jkstampin 01-02-2009 02:25 PM

I use them both all the time! I basically do embossing in the cuttlebug for cards, and use the cricut for scrapbooking. I couldn't imagine being without either one anymore.

peebsmama 01-02-2009 02:38 PM

I have the Cricut and a die cutting machine. Both get lots of use because I use them for different things. One thing I love my die cutting machine (not a cuttlebug but the same concept) for is using the nesties and the cuttlebug embossing folders. But if you don't own these things and don't plan to get them, then it sounds like you really don't have much use for the cuttlebug.

It's a pretty decent size but what makes it easy to store all my stuff is that I have a Cropper Hopper "wall unit" and an L-shaped workspace (also comprised of Cropper Hopper drawers and cubes) and a long desk-area also made up of Cropper Hopper drawers/cubes.

DH built it for me - it is a copy of something I saw in a magazine article called "While you were away at CKU".

Just wanted to clear up this misunderstanding about Michael's return policy. They do not routinely keep a percentage when you return something; only if you don't have a receipt. I have a Michael's receipt that I got today when I purchased something. The return policy on the back says:

"If you're not satisfied with your purchase, return it in its original condition with a sales receipt within 60 days........

(i.e. If you have a receipt, and the purchase was within 60 days, you will receive the amount back that you paid.)

For everyday merchandise returned without a receipt, a merchandise credit will be issued based on the promotional or everyday price less 20%."

There are also some exceptions for seasonal and clearance merchandise without a receipt, of course. Most stores have that policy.

Oops, should have read Adalia's post about this before I posted this. Sorry for repeating info.

Michelle My Belle 01-02-2009 07:51 PM

So glad you're enjoying your new toys!! How sweet that you get to craft with your grandaughter!!

To the OP: buy what you want, what you love and what you will use! GL with your decision!

wooohooo awesome I am soooo glad that you decided to keep it, I have the cricut BB, and the CB and I have just started all this this past summer I love both of mine equally as well, now may I ask why are you getting this "rubber plumber's gasket" what will this be used for? :-D ;)

I have a ton of fiskars plates that I want to use in the cuttlebug. I read on another thread that you can use the plumbers gasket in the sandwich to help with the impression. I was getting a subtle impression with a mouse pad (fun foam wasn't working) but now I want to try the plumber's stuff. I bought 2 thicknesses. I hope to play with them today.

I have an Expeession and a CB and a QK and a SU Big Shot (I'm a demo) and a Klik n Kut and a Sidekick and I'll be ordering a Revolution when I get home from vacation. LOL. So no, I don't think it's too much. :-)

I love them all for different reasons and wouldn't trade any of them!
