Talking on another thread about storing stamps got me to thinking that I'm having a real problem storing my punches. I have a lot of them and haven't found any really effective storage solution. Hope some of you can shed some light. Thanks. sab

There are a number of different options that have been suggested by a bunch of different folks. (I still have implemented any but desperately need to do so.)
I recently purchased a cassette/CD/Video storage rack for $5 at the Thrift shop. My mega, giga, button and SU punches fit just perfect. The problem is finding the best place to put it. It is heavy now that is it almost full.
I ordere the small oval and large oval from SU so it will be full them.
I have a closet next door to the room where I do my stamping, and inside the door, I've hung one of those shoe bags that have 24 see-through pockets. (I bought mine at WalMart, but you can find them just about anywhere.) The Marvy Giga punches easily fit one to a pocket, and some of the smaller shape stamps (circles, tags) I put two to a pocket. It works really well and you can see what you need at a glance, plus, they're out of sight and take up a slender amount of space that wouldn't be used otherwise.

I also use teh over the door show orginizer. Works like a Jem and I can even see all my punches!!!
I use an over the door shoe thingy as well. However, I didn't get the clear plastic pockets. I just punch out a sample and stick it to the outside of the pocket. Makes it easy to figure out which punch is where.
Before I got into stamping, I was really into punch art. I own over 135 punches! So I had to have a good way to organize all of them. I bought an Iris Cart 6 drawer system and have all the punches in the drawers by type. So one drawer for circles, one for squares, one for flowers, etc. I have the drawers labled with my dymo letratag labels.
I also have an index of all my punches. Whenever I buy a new one, I punch a sample and adhere it in my little notebook. One page per type (again, circles, squares, etc). This lets me know what I have in a glance, plus, I can take it with me when I shop so I don't buy duplicates of anything. I also have a section in the notebook for punch art creations (like flowers made of several punches) so I can remember how to make them in the future.
About 10 years ago, when I first started buying punches, I bought the Crop in Style Punch Pal. I just googled it and see that the small/medium size is still available. I have one that size and one in the large size for bigger punches. They hook together and hang on the back of a door. If I had a choice and only wanted one, I'd get the large one ( it's bigger in that the pockets are bigger but the overall dimensions are the same) because you could always fit two smaller punches in one pocket. I only checked 2 websites and one said $39.99 and one said $17.99 so I'd definitely shop around before buying.
Has anyone has issues with the weight of the punches effecting the door? I want to get a shoe thing for the door but my husband will have an issue with it because of the weight. Give me some ammo do diffuse his concerns!

Umm yeah tell him not to buy hollow doors and it's not a problem :}
Solid core doors can hold it no issue!! You can make your own if you are crafty with sewing or ask your MIL like I did :}
The dollar store ones rip & Shred// not made well :}
A cloth one works great. I have the names of them on the outside with my Dymo thingee

I would think it would depend on the number and size of your punches, whether or not it would effect the door / hinges. One thing that I noticed whan I was hanging a shoebag full of knitting needles on the back of MY door was that the door wouldn't stay open without a brick.
I have a LOT of punches and finally decided to split them into categories (Holiday, flowers/leaves/trees, basic shapes, corners) and store them in the bottom drawers of my plastic storage units. By putting them in the bottom drawer I lessen the chances of the whole unit toppling over when I open the drawer.
Still, storage is an issue. One thing I remember from looking at kitchen renovation ideas: If you nail quarter inch dowels into the wall at 1 inch intervals you can slide 1 inch wide boards into place between them. A 3 inch board would hold a number of punches and keep them accessible. I haven't tried that yet but plan to once I get my art room closet cleaned out (new years resolution # 1).
Another thought is to recycle mesh cube CD storage units - attach to the wall for punch storage. sab
I have my clear shoe holder hung on the back on the door to my craft room. It is full now so I don't know what I am going to do if I order more punches.

I don't have all that many punches so I lay them out on two trays and have them in the closet and bring them out to my working table when I want to use them. That way I can look at them and decide exactly what I want to do. However, the two trays are now full and I still want to buy some more St Up punches so I don't know what I am going to do
I did get a clear shoe holder and have it over my hollow core door and LOVE it! The weight doesn't seem to be an issue. It really would take WAY more weight then I could ever give it to bother the hinges.

They're balanced just the same as the bigger ones. Their "tails" fit over the front dowel, and their bodies rest on the dowel slightly behind and below it. I didn't think they were going to fit, but it's no problem.

Ahhhh.......it was hard to tell from the pic but I can see how it would work. If I had more floor or table top space, I would love this method over the shoe holder but alas the room is long and narrow and both are at a premium.

I just put up 2 Cafe Rods from Walmart on the wall and put all my stampin up punches on them. I love it. They are all in view with no digging in the drawers anymore. If you do this just make sure you buy extra support brackets for the center of the rod as the punches get heavy.

I was happy to find that an Ikea pot rack which I couldn't use in our new kitchen worked on top of a dresser for punches. Then any that are overflow (or don't match, lol) go in the top drawer with handheld punches, paper crimper, etc. (Sorry looked for the product name of that rack & couldn't find it.) In answer...
1. I only wish my space stayed as clean as it was in the picture. It does, however, get fairly straightened up each night.
2. I used an 8' section of gutter, which was a standard length from Home Depot.
Oh I hear you about a clean space. I think when I get mine clean, I'll take pictures, then when it's messy (98% off the time) I can look at the photos and pretend, haha. ;O)
OH MY GOSH.....I came here looking for ways to store punches and lo and behold....I have this very same CD rack in the garage.....I was trying to sell it at my garage sale. It works PERFECTLY!!!

Here is a sample of one of my flowers:
I just did this with my punches, bought a 3 drawer cart with two smaller drawers to put my SU punches in, as I didn't want to display all of my punches. It rolls right under my table and when I need one I just pull it out and open the drawer to find the punch I need. So far I'm very happy with it!
This rack has SEVEN Ikea rails on it plus the cute little baskets. My hubby is making two more racks like this with SEVEN rails each....one is for my sis but the other is for my room. I love this punch storage because I see them and use them. The little pink stool is so I can reach the top rail.

Could you hang it on the wall behind the door?? Just put something sturdy in the wall to hold the shoe hanger on. ;)
