I was using Neenah Cardstock, the image was a Coffeepot about 1.5 x 1 in., 7 of those and one angel image - the dress area colored was probably 3 x 2. I did not do alot of blending on any of the images - I know on the angel I went over the area twice with BG01, I was practicing and did not want to waste my ink on a big image...lol... If that makes any difference.

hmmm I don't think that amount of coloring should have left your marker bone dry. Are u sure you replaced the cap tightly after using...if the cap wasn't on tight that could cause it to go dry. i really am not sure though as i had a bunch of mine go dry on me when I first started out but I was really heavy handed with my coloring. I have learned to hold my markers very close to the tip and that allows me to lay down a lot less ink. I also got my first markers on ebay and I don't think they were as 'new' as I was led to believe.

I am pretty sure I had my cap on...who knows...I am trying not to be too heavy handed but I think at first I was and have lightened up considerably.
Thanks for your responses. These markers are a bit addicting aren't they...lol.

Are you sure it is dry? Have you tried taking the caps off both ends and letting it sit for a few minutes. Supposedly this will let the ink redistribute. I have heard this can happen if you fly with it, or something, and this was what was suggested. Never had this have to happen... but... in theory it will work if this is the problem.

that is a great suggestion Alaine, I forgot about that. One of my markers seemed dry once and I tried that and it worked. If both ends are not dry then this may work. And yes copics are totally adictive!

I have had those for about a month and love them! I thought the prices were very reasonable, esp. considering the cost of other storage systems.

There are a few retailers that sell them - Hobby Lobby (limited quantities), Archivers now carries them.

I usually buy mine online from Oozak.com: 'eCustomer' Service at it's BEST! or Carpe Diem Store - Art,Architecture,Hobby Supply. They have the best prices, but there are others that sell them. You can just Google "Copic Markers" and you'll get a bunch of places. I buy the Sketch markers. I like the tips they have and hold more ink that the Caios.

I agree Arlene. The more classes the better.

I took Jenn Balcer's certification class last Saturday. Learned enough to know that I need to learn more! I may take it again before moving on to the Intermediate Class.

Just bought an airbrush kit today. Wow! I didn't realize how expensive they were, but Hobby Lobby had all their airbrush products 30% off, so that was a little bit of savings anyway. Fun!

I highly recommend that you take Suzanne Dean's class first before you take anyone else's...just a thought...because you learn an easy way to color that's not coloring in circles. She has online classes, too. I think doing hair and figuring out the light source will take a lot of practice for me. She showed us the air brush...not sure how long I'll be able to resist making that purchase!! Did you get the ABS1 so you can use it with an air compressor? Did you get an air compressor, too? Suzanne suggested getting a small one from a hardware type store for less $$. You should have lots of fun with that because you can color white flowers, ribbon, etc. to match your projects!

Bummer! The key is flicking and not coloring in circles. During the class my problem was using too much dark to begin with. Her way uses less ink, too, and takes less time. Oh, well...everyone has their own way of creating!

I'll have to check out Suzanne's videos. I'm limited as to whose classes I go to in person since they each have their own geographical area where they teach. I did take a class last year, but it wasn't for certification and it's suggested that you take the class more than once.

Suzanne's classes are NOt for certification so that doesn't matter with her classes.

I've learned so much from Suzanne's on-line u-tube video's, and think she is amazing! Since I learned "dark to light" it's all I know. Whatever we do/learn, Copics are awesome!

I was finally able to watch one of her tutorials - I started with coloring and shading and watched how she did the dark to light. WOW! That was so eye-opening. I worked on an image last night after watching that and it was so much easier and I think came out so much better than when I was using the traditional concept. Can't wait to have some time to look at some more of her videos.

Glad I could "convert" you to an easier way, mschoener! Today I used a HL coupon to buy the ABS1 for airbrushing...I could be dangerous now! LOL!

Arlene, it was one of those "eureka" moments. I bought one of those kits the other day. Didn't realize how pricey they were. Haven't used mine yet. I really need to be way more organized before I get that out of the package.

Hi Everyone, I have been a member for a while but I lurk rather than chat mostly but as soon as I came across this thread I just had to jump in and say hello! I am totally addicted to my copic markers and I am continually experimenting trying to work on new ideas to use them. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.

hugs

Zoe

I've got a tutorial on my blog specifically showing how to FLICK. You can see it HERE.

In my classes, I teach using small circles to apply ink for the first layer to get a nice smooth, even coat (that's what makes alcohol ink markers different than dye ink markers). Then, if you want to apply layers of ink (shading) then I use the flicking motion. It helps make the blending easier.

It's not really a one-way or the other, it's a combination of both. Either way... I always suggest that students learn the proper techniques and then tweak them to make them to work best for them.

Welcome Zoe - it is an addiction. I really am happy when I'm in my stamp room creating something. I've been playing with my Copics trying to get some Christmas cards done and I really love the way the image I did last night came out.

I tried Suzanne's trick of using the chisel point to erase mistakes and it really worked better than the brush point.

Thank you for the welcome.
Yes the chisel end is great for fixing mistakes as you have more control over it. I can't recall the technique Suzanne uses but for me I 'push' the ink in the direction I want it to go (back towards the line for a mistake)
Try not to oversaturate the paper with too much ink though or the ink inside the line will bleed out.

My technique is to usually 'push' it about 3-4 times, then let it dry (always looks worse when it is wet) then if I still need to clean up, push it towards the line 2-3 times and dry and repeat if necessary.

If the mistake is so bad or it is red I am trying to fix, then I either cut out the image or add a background to hide the mistakes.

Have you all checked out Carpe Diem's sale on Copic sketch markers? On sale for $3.95! Free shipping on $50 or more. I'll have to grab a few while they are on sale.

Don't hate me for this response but, I've found I don't need all of them. Colors that touch each other on the wheel are so similar, you don't really need them. (We can still WANT them.) Also, I took an on-line class from Colleen and she talked about toner grays. I started using them and WOW!!! You can get the shading without needing a darker color. I'm still ordering more though!

OMG Gale, I don't think I could ever sell any of my Copics even if I don't use them all. I am going to put off buying any more Sketch markers and get the rest of the Spica pens and the Multiliners.

YIKES!! That would be like selling my children. I am rather attached to my Copics.

I admire your willpower! I have a lot of things I should get rid of but cant part with. (but I would not consider myself a hoarder)
