Maybe this is old news...but carpediem has sketch on sale for $3.56 through tomorrow...still with free shipping over $80!

I skimmed the thread a bit and didn't see it mentioned...so sorry if it's already been posted!

I just looked at the Carpe Diem site - they wanted $11 something for shipping 3 markers - is that crazy, or what? Guess I'll make do with the colors I have

I agree, I wouldn't pay that much shipping for 3 markers. It really would only cost them about $2.50-$3 to mail them.

It's FREE shipping if you spend $80! The normal shipping has always been high though...I am just glad they have a free amt now!

thank you for answering my question. I was more worries about the Dryness out here over the heat. See there is almost 0 humidity here and pretty much everything evaporates because its so dry. I guess I will have to keep an eye on them

Default Hot climates and copics

Somewhere I read in a post by Marianne from Copics that in the gulf war a shipment of Copics got caught in the war and sat in the desert for about 5 months and they were still juicy when they were opened up. So if I lived in hot dry climate I would just make sure I put the top on them quickly after each use. She said you can leave them in a hot car. Darlene

I have taken mine with me and colored in a hot (admitedly humid) car. I found the flow was quite quick probably because of the heat - besides that I didn't notice any difference.

Default Black Ink Smearing with Copics

I need some advice! I just purchased new copic markers and I am having trouble with the black ink from my stamped image smearing. I was using SU black pad and then went and purchased the Archival jet black pad from Michael's which works better, but I am still getting some smudging. I even heat set it, thinking that would help, but it is still there which looks bad with the light colors that I am using. Can someone please tell me how they do it! Thanks to all of you!!

You need Momento or Brilliance. Most everyone I know uses Momento. If you don't let it dry all the way you will notice some feathering.

ETA: Brilliance has to be heat set. Some people also emboss their image to contain the color and it won't bleed either. HTH!

Get the Memento Tuxedo Black pad by Tsukineko. I use it for all my stamping. No smearing, no heat setting. Just stamp and you are ready to color! The best Black pad I ever bought.

BYW, The SU! pad that I have looks purple instead of black and even though they say it is waterproof, whenever I used my prismacolor pencils and OMS, the ink smeared with light colors. So, my SU! Basic Black pad is just sitting in the drawer, soon to be thrown out!

It's probably a combination of the cardstock that you are using as well as the ink. There have been several posts on SCS (this thread, as well as others). The ink that seems to work the best: Memento (Tsundinko), Palette (Stewart Superior), Brillance (don't remember manufacturer). In terms of CS - Neenah, Gina K Pure Luxury, PTI, and some report success with Georgia Pacific. I personally have not had success with SU black or Archival black. Another alternative is to use a black pigment ink and emboss with clear fine EP (take care not to go over the embossed lines too much). Good luck!

I agree with the recommendation of the Memento tuxedo black and I have Palette noir as well.

I'm in Kentucky and sometimes the humidity reeks havoc and there is dampness in the cardstock - you can't see it or necessarily feel it but I have more feathering problems when it is more humid, so I have learnt even with the best tools I can afford (memento ink and Neenah cardstock) that on those days I have to heat set as well to dry out the cardstock as much as anything.

The Memento ink is great. A Muse also has a great black dye ink designed to work with Copics (get the refill bottle too). Just give your ink a few seconds to dry and you should be good to go!

I'm excited to find this thread! I just started teaching Copic 101 classes in California since the markers are so popular!

I haven't used any of these. My favorite is Gina K Pure Luxary or the MFT Paper Panels. I like the panels b/c they're small rectangles, but they're very thick. If it's something I want to cut out, I use the PL.

I'm actually one that doesn't care for the Momento pad as much as it's raved about here. I've not had any problems with my Memories ink though. Good luck finding an ink that works for you.

I like Memento, but it is not as good with the clear stamps as versafine is. But with versafine, I have to clear emboss over it, or massive bleedage.

I totally agree. I read an extensive review by Ellen Hutson on her blog comparing different inks using different papers. The SU! simply doesn't work at all and the Staz On smudges as well. I do have the Memento black, but I tend to go to the Adirondack Pitch Black and have had no smudging problems. I like that Adirondack has an Espresso that is a dark brown for those times that you really don't want a black.

Ditto, although I have had quite a bit of success (not total) with Versafine even without embossing...it does take longer to dry but then it is usually fine. Then again, I have used StaZon without smearing, also! I am using the GP white most of the time, although I also have Gina K and Neenah papers if I want something sturdier and whiter. I find them a tad harder to blend on because they are soooo thick, but the papers themselves are so nice!

I just placed an order for 34 more markers from Carpediem thanks to you enablers! aaargh! But I have to say, I use my Copics more than anything else now. When I get into a situation where they don't work with the ink for some reason (like with a RAK or swap), I'm almost at a loss as to how to color. What DO people use with the SU ink?!?
I see some people using watercoloring or colored pencils with OMS and getting fabulous coloring, but for me it seems to take a higher level of skill to use them; harder to control where the color goes (for me)....

Default tips, suggestions

Hi Ladies,

I thought I would post two of my first creations with my new copic markers and ask you all for some suggestions. I have been reading Marianne's blog but there is just so much information on there I haven't been able to read even a 1/4 of it yet. My question is how do you all determine where the light/shadows should be. I know that using the lines of the stamps give you some indication where the shadows should be but I am still having a difficult time picturing this in my head. I am more visual and have tried to watch some of the youtube videos but they don't play well for some reason and stop every couple of seconds or don't even play through the whole thing. So here is my image, please feel free to be honest as I would really love to figure this out. Thanks so much!!!

So cute! The way I do it is first determine where my light source is coming from. I usually put a small spool of thread on the table in location that I want my light source to come from - that way I always remember my angle. If you still have trouble determining where the shadows should be, try putting an apple or other 3D object at the same angle in front of your light source and see where the shadows/light areas fall.

I hope this is the info you were looking for. I think you had a good start with those cards - they turned out cute.

Thank you Tori! I never thought to put an apple in front of me, what a great idea. I think that would be much better than just something on the corner of the page to remind me. Thanks again!!!

Hi Rhonda I am new to this too. I know we always look to improve, but I must say your coloring is fabulous for a newbie. I am almost too embarrased now to post my first pic

Since I'm very new at this too, I'm hesitant to offer any advice, but here goes, anyway!

First, Ronda, I think you did a great job coloring your images. For both the little girl's hair in the first picture, and the hat in the second picture, you have great highlights, and we can see where the light is coming from.

If I could make one suggestion, though, I would recommend more shading in the children's clothing. I think the rule of thumb would be to select two, or better yet, three colors in the same family, and with the same first digit, but second numbers should be separated by 2 or 3 digits. Color the area completely with the lightest color, then put in shading with the middle color, then color over the line where the colors meet with the first color again to blend, etc.

The apple suggestion is a good one. One post I saw recommended actually laying a marker or pencil on your desk at the angle the imagined light would be coming from, such as at the upper right of your paper, pointing towards the lower left. This is a comfortable angle for most right-handed people, and would result in the darker shades being placed toward the left of your figures.

HTH,

I had very good experience with Oozak as well. They shipped the next day and I had it in my hands in two days. It was just amazing.

Somebody very nice once RAK'ed me 2 Copic markers because they somehow ended up with doubles. Well now I have ended up with a double. I meant to order V95 and I ordered RV 95 by mistake and I already have that one. So I want to pay it forward and RAK someone who is in need of RV95 Baby Blossoms.

I will send it to the first person who replies that they want it under me. If you're first, PM me your address and I will mail it out to you either tomorrow or Friday.

Ronda,

It's a great start! Shadows are not easy, so don't be hard on yourself. You can check all my shadow posts here. Just start from the oldest and work your way through - I'd read each post a couple times so you can understand what I'm talking about.

I would second the idea that you need more contrast on the clothes. It's a good start, but it's not dynamic so it doesn't pop. This might help you understand the need for contrast (part 1, part 2, part 3)

Second, try using a clear line guide like this post to figure out where all your shadows should be. It will help you be consistent.

Let me know if this helps!
