I don't have an answer to your question, but wanted to tell you that I think you did a GREAT job on Willow.

I don't know if it is the effect you are looking for, however, I have a copic card in my gallery that has a basket on it and I used loads of browns because of the texture of the basket it isn't blended. Hope that helps.

Oh and I second the cross hatching method.

Period Style is a great store with decent prices. I like it because you can choose a custom set of 12. Meaning you pick your colors (as long as they are in stock). They are the first place I ever tried and they shipped out super quick. Also, on custom sets shipping is free and it comes with the case. Have fun!

Unfortunately, at this time they don't ship outside the USA - so Canada is outta luck. Does anyone know of a good Canadian supplier like the one mentioned above?

I like Period Style because if you order 12, they come in a box instead of loose. They were very fast to ship as well.

Carpediem is still the better choice. Individually the markers are only $3.22 so a "custom" set would still be less than the $38 at period style.

I take back what I just said! From PeriodStyle, no s/h, so $38.00 is it. This might be the better deal after all.....ummmmm!

But then RJ77 already said that. sorry.

I just ordered my Ciao pens from currys, online art store based in Ontario. They were a really good price to get the sets of 36 and shipping is free with orders over $35. It worked out with taxes and all in about $3.80 CDN per pen.

I did a lot of research before ordering them. The problem with ordering from the US if you are in Canada is that we have currency exchange loss, shipping is higher (between $6-$30US depending on vendor), and then for orders over about $50 the Customs folks stop it at the border and then make you pay duty/taxes before you can pick up.

Hope this helps. I have been experimenting with my new pens and am happy.

For those looking for a starter list, Suzanne Dean's blog Scrap Bitz now has a pdf on it with just such a list:
http://scrapbitz.blogspot.com/2009/04/bling-it-on.html
Look under pdf files/downloads on the right sidebar...
I have most of these colors and I can say I think she's got a good list. I might add YR21 because I use that a lot (nice, warm yellow for blond hair)...

hmm, I don't know. Did you get a new screen, with a big "Download" button on it? I had to click on that in addition to the link on the blog...then it asked if I wanted to save or open it. You have to open it in order to print it (you can save it first, and then find it and open it). Does that help?

I did that. First I opened it and although I could see the text on the computer screen, nothing printed. Then I saved it and opened it and still nothing. Grrr!

I don't want to ask an obvious question, but it's kind of hard to type these things rather than if we were talking...but, I assume you are familiar with pdf files, and did go up and ask it to print? What did you see on the screen?
If you still can't get it to work, I can put the info here and see if that helps...

Yes, I did click on the printer icon. I saw the screen with all the color names and Copic numbers. My printer came up as usual...printing 1 of 1 but nothing printed on the paper except for....copicstarterlist.pdf on iPaper By Scribd-powered by Box.net...page 1.(at the very bottom of the paper)

What is a pdf file anyway?

I tried to print the preview file and got some teeny tiny writing - but when I downloaded the pdf file, it printed out perfectly. So much for being lazy and not wanting to download!

Yes, that's what I said at first...you had to download it by clicking on the big button after you clicked on the link in the blog

There are several suggestions in this thread, just in the last 2 or 3 pages, but Oozak has great service and good prices.
As for a "set," I wouldn't get a set necessarily. I'd get individual colors...the pdf file we were talking about has a nice list of suggested starter colors

my fave is Period Style because you can order a custom set meaning YOU pick the colors you want (Not some else's idea of a mix) and shipping is FREE. Sets come in 12, 36 and 72 in a plastic case. Service is great. IF something is on BO and you are willing to wait, just say BO ok and they will ship as soon as they have them. They usually are well stocked.

That's a good deal! If you're spending over $50 it's free shipping at Oozak too, but you don't get the case...

Off the top of my head
  • Ciao's are cheaper normally.
  • Ciao's hold 1 cc less ink that Sketch
  • Ciao's are round, Sketch are oval
  • Both are refillable
  • Ciaos only have the number on the side, Sketch have the number on the lid and side.
  • Sketch fit into the airbrush system without any adjustments but it can be made to fit Ciaos.
  • Sketch come in more colors so if you are the type of person it would drive crazy to have a mix of Sketch and Ciao you would need to consider that.
  • They aren't making any more colors in Ciao from what I have read.

Hope that helps.

I have Ciao's and one Sketch in a non-Ciao color. So far I have had to refill my blender pen and that is it.

thank you so much. It would be better to get the stretch then. How did you start your collection of markers?

I'm probably not the best to ask... I jumped in with both feet because I did a lot of research and liked the results I was seeing and bought all the Ciao's in two 72 sets from Oozak. I think it is really personal on how you want to go about getting them. I knew the "drive me crazy" factor for me was not having a color I "needed".

This is a good starter list...
Personally, I don't care if I have mixed versions, so I would get the Ciaos in whatever colors I wanted, and only the Sketches if I wanted a color that only came in the Sketch version. I don't plan to airbrush, and I don't read the color off the cap anyway, so to me it was fine to go with Ciaos. Personal preference, that's all...

Who here has taken the certification class? I'm interested to know what you thought... I'm looking at the schedule, and I'm not sure the afternoon would be all that helpful to me (altered items, airbrushing, etc.), as I don't usually do that kind of thing. I just want to color better! Also, I already have a lot of the products you get in the packet.
What do you think, those who have taken it? Please PM me if you'd like to share, so we don't hijack this thread!

I just received my 72 set of Ciao markers they are home waiting for me and I am at work!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHH

But Ciao's for me were a lot less expensive got the 72 pack for $193 from Carpe Diem and that was a good price from what I saw. I don't need exact colors but wanted to have a lot of them (or a good amount) because I would go crazy and not be able to finish something would tick me off. LOL

Also, I already have a lot of the products you get in the packet.
What do you think, those who have taken it? Please PM me if you'd like to share, so we don't hijack this thread!
You'd probably be better off taking a class from someone who has been certified. The certification helps teachers learn a variety of techniques that they then adapt to their own projects and workshops. If you're not going to be doing alcohol ink effects, airbrushing, choosing papers and inks for your store, or troubleshooting your airbrush then the class would be overkill. If you just want to know what interesting things you can do with the markers then go ahead and take the class.

Certification is supposed to be a little bit of everything rolled up in one so that you get inspired to keep playing and practicing in the future. It opens your eyes to what is possible. I wish there was enough time during a class to go in-depth for 5 hrs on just coloring, but there's too much info.

Well, this morning I coloured my first full stamp image using the copics. Obviously I have much to learn!

I'm used to watercolouring with the SU Watercolour markers. I have about 53 of them including the colours and neutrals, and always felt I had too many colours since I only use about half of them. I have 144 Copics, but felt like I just couldn't get the colour and effect I wanted with the copics. it came out too dark and too bright and didn't have the depth of my watercolouring...I expect this had to do with the artist and not the product. It leaked through the paper and I worried about wasting ink--it was very stressful. My first instinct was to go out and get some more colours to fill in the areas I had trouble with (like the sky etc) but I think i need to just learn how to use them.

Anyhow, just feeling kind of stressed and depressed with my first efforts with these pens.....tell me it will get better!

Have recently taken a class at a local craft store and it has helped. With th number of copics you have, would suggest if there is one in your area, to try to take a few classes.

If you have all the Ciao's start your sky with B00 -

The colors are more intense and true than water coloring so you have to start light and work to dark in my experience. Even with the blender it is difficult for me to have a dark color get lighter.

Copics are popular with graphic artists and comic book illustrators so that is the density of color you are going to get with this product.

Also don't worry about mixing mediums - many copic artists mix media. So if you have a watercolor you LOVE as sky IMO try it. It would probably be easier to mix with acrylics but you never know until you try. You might have to "seal" the image with versamark and clear embossing powder... just some ideas.

Default sky colouring

Thanks for these tips.
I did a second one and it was somewhat better, perhaps a little less forgiving than watercolours, but the nice thing is I didn't have to be all careful about the quantity of water and the paper wasn't all warped at the end as it often is when I watercolour.
I did go and grab B000 from the local craft store, but how do you get the varigated effects of sky? With my watercolours I just quickly swooshed my brush from left to write from top to bottom leaving areas in between and it wound up with layers of "clouds", but the effect isn't quite right with the marker. Also, I often use yellow to indicate a sunny sky (same method), but the yellow seems so bright, and I couldn't find one that seemed pale enough. What do you all do for your sky's? Do you leave it white? I am worried about it looking odd if I mix the mediums.

Thank you, Marianne! That's kind of what I was thinking. I may end up doing some altered items some day, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to do airbrushing. I am already familiar with the papers and inks, and can do a basic job of coloring. I will look for a class on coloring nearby, although there are only 3 people listed as being certified in Ohio!
