this layout is a lot better than my first and i shaded with darker markers rather than using same marker. i say "shade" lightly b/c i just outline the image. not too artsy on this yet.

i haven't done a lot of shopping around but i know oozak sells them for like $2.86??? and you get to choose individual colors for that price. the set you mention would be $2.42 each but you are stuck with a certain set of colors.

that help?

Question

Please enlighten me! Why are there so many shades of gray and how many do I really need. I'm getting ready to place my first order on line and basically getting the SU compatable colors and the colors for IN Color that I can't get in a SU marker. I'd like to learn to blend for a more realistic look and have read that I need to stay with the same letters and 1 number then skip a number or two, so if I am blending with darker shades of the same color, why do I need gray? Do you use the gray to make any color darker, therefore not needed several colors in the same group?

Thanks for any help and clarification!

For me color choice is not a factor, price is, this is my first set and I simply want to try at a bargain price...then consider further purchases...

Color choice should be your number one consideration when making your first puchase! You would be better off with 6 colors you can use and enjoy than 12 colors that have no relationship to each other and will frustrate the heck out of you!

To answer your question, yes $29 is a good price for 12 copic ciaos, if they have free (or very cheap) shipping on that. Otherwise I would try to stretch my budget a little and go for ordering a few more to get free shipping on a $50 purchase someplace else.

You don't!!

In fact I think the regular black is horrid...I got rid of it...it looked shiny like an ink spilled. I kept special black but have NEVER used it! I use dark grays instead.

I used my black when coloring tires on a stamp that I used. That's the only time that I can see using it because it's SO dark.

All you really need to add is W7 and C7. These are what I use to do my shading to get the black look. I have black and don't so much use it. You could also touch the tip of your black with these lighter greys and build on your color. That would work too!

Here is an example I did with the greys. If you wanted it to look more black just add more dark and work over to the lightest color, but have less of the lighter.

Okay, I've read through 6 or 7 pages and my eyes are getting tired. This is probably on here somewhere, but will SU basic black and brown smear using copics? What are the best inks to use?

Thanks in advance.

SU will smear.....you might be able to get them to cooperate if you heat set them and wait a while. But it really isn't worth it IMO. If you are going to invest in markers than pick up a Memento inkpad...

HTH!

Default My Copic Card

Hi all,
This is the first card I made after receiving my set of copics yesterday. They are so fun to play with. I modified a layout I found on my favorite blog http://www.kiyomikrafts.com/kiyomi/

I realized I need to purchase some lighter colors though. Thanks for all the helpful tips. I bought the memento ink and PTI cardstock.

If you don't go over the lines, you can use SU ink. I have used it for quite a few images where I wanted a colored outline with no bleeding. You just have to be careful and not rub the marker over the ink.

For most of my Copic coloring, I use Memento Tuxedo Black and Brilliance Graphite Black....both are great, but some have had trouble with Brilliance if they don't heat set it.

I found a place online that has better Copic prices than OOZAK.com. It's called Carpe Diem Store. They sell a box of 36 Copic Ciao's for like $90.00. They do charge $10.00 to ship them, but it's still a few dollars cheaper than OOZAK. I'm going to order some tonight. At this price, I can order the box of 72, Wooo Hooo!!!!

Here's the link:

I finally got my backordered markers (from Christmas, no kidding!).
I got B99 (cool) and R46. Hmmmmm.... looks an awful lot like R29 (which I already had), ARGH!
Why, oh why? I only have 95, so to have two so close is so frustrating! Anyone use both of these?

I ordered a few markers from Hanna Stamps and it is taking forever. They were $3.33 each for the ciaos. AFter a week I emailed and they said it has shipped, 2 days later I just got the tracking number so they are sending them 3 days after they said they are shipping.
Oh well. As long as I get them in good shape I guess it is okay.

I am so glad you mentioned they are similar because I have R29. I hate it when they come and I swatch them and I have a very, very similar color. All that money spend....I hear your pain.

Even with the shipping cost, I think CarpeDiem has lower prices. I ordered a set yesterday and they shipped today...

Great card and wonderful coloring!

For most of my Copic coloring, I use Memento Tuxedo Black and Brilliance Graphite Black....both are great, but some have had trouble with Brilliance if they don't heat set it.
Someone on another forum said that SU black works with copics. Haven't tried it. Not my favorite because of the purple tint. I like momento.

This is where I've ordered my markers, too. I've ordered individual markers, around 20 in each order, and I've thought the price, even with P&H was good, the selection great, and the time from order to my door (about a week) very good. I like this place.

I used Carpe Diem this week, and my experience was ver pleasant. I ordered some Copic stuff on tuesday morning, and got my items delivered on Wednesday, really well packaged. Not to mention that they have the cheapest prices on Copic products that I have seen so far.

The link to the store is: http://www.carpediemstore.com/index.asp

Since Copics price increase at the beginning of the year, it looks like the cheapest place to buy them (with shipping) has swapped from Oozak to Carpe Diem. Oozak had to implement the price change immediately (probably because their stock was out) and Carpe Diem looks like they are still on the old pricing. I bet it won't be long before they re-order and have to up their prices, too, though.
