Oh, and Cher, thanks for all the hard work. I bookmarked your blog.
You're welcome...and unfortunately none of the copics have any sheen to them, so they really won't look metallic. So...the best you can get is a golden yellow, grey and rusty brown.

I love Marvy Paint Pens for metallics! They actually reflect light and look like metal!

Here is a link to Marianne's blog about coloring gold objects. http://ilikemarkers.blogspot.com/200...ring-gold.html She also mentions using cool grays for metal objects. HTH!

Thanks Mary Jane. I actually tried that yellow thing to make gold and it came out okay, just didn't have the right yellows. It's nice to know I can do it though.

Another question, for some reason I have trouble finding things through the search on the Ilikemarkers blog. I searched for how to color hair and got the skin info. Anyknow know where to find the hair coloring info.

From what i heard on my certification class, watercolor paper does not work well with copics (SU wasn't recomended as well). They have some kind of coating that makes the pigments stay on top of the page and for that making it hard for blending.

Couple of quick questions from another newbie ...
1) Can you mix coloring mediums when coloring an image with Copics? I don't mean like blending, but more like coloring one area with Copics and another area with something else -- pencils and blender pen, watercolor, etc... (I have a limited set of Copics at this stage)

2) I'm noticing some shiny shadowy areas in my coloring when the lamplight catches it in a certain way. Am I coloring incorrectly, could it be the paper (SU! WW), or is this just one of the things that Copics do?

Thanks in advance! I love this thread!!!

Check out Marianne's blog.. She did a survey of papers with copics as well as inks.. I think I remember an article on www.craftcritique.com also..

When I need white cardstock just for images I use Georgia Pacific and layer it..

1) Yes, Copics work great with other mediums as long as they are not Alcohol based. Alcohol based products will smear your Copic colored area, so be careful there.

2) This may be the result of coloring too slow, and letting the edges dry. Try coloring in small circles, side to side, quickly making sure your edges are wet all the time. Also your paper may be the problem, if its a coated paper, then it won't let your marker soak the paper enought for you to have an even cooring. (Copic ink on coated papers dry rather quickly)

So you can see that it can be done, but I wouldn't recommend it because Copic markers are known to be a bit pricey and I would want to take the best care of them.
thanks for this! I was wondering as well.

Default Question about picking an orange color

I like the SU pumpkin pie orange (YR16), but I am thinking it might be a bit dark for some applications. So would I be safe ordering one shade lighter (YR15)? Does anyone have the copic marker YR15 Yellow pumpkin? If so, can you tell me if it looks like a lighter shade of pumpkin pie?

Thanks!

Personally I like the YR14 best for pumpkin pie. Just saying.

Oh, really! Is YR14 quite a bit lighter but can be colored over a couple times to get to the color of pumpkin pie cardstock? That would ideal for me. I like the marker colors to be a shade or two lighter.

Here is a list of colors I am thinking of getting. Do you have any suggestions for lighter versions that still "coordinate" well with each of these? Or should I leave some of the lighter colors as is since they are very light to begin with?

*Apricot Appeal / YR21 Cream
*Almost Amethyst / B63 Light Hydrangea
*Green Galore / G14 Apple Green
*Real Red / R29 Lipstick Red
*Lovely Lilac / BV17 Deep Reddish Blue
*Ballet Blue / B23 Phthalo Blue
*So Saffron / Y21 Buttercup Yellow
*Regal Rose / R85 Rose Red
*More Mustard / YR23 Yellow Ochre
*Pumpkin Pie / YR15 Yellow Pumpkin (one shade lighter than the matching YR16 just so it might be more usable? Or maybe I will go with YR14 based on your suggestion.)
*Old Olive / Y95 Pale Olive
*Gray for shading copic Neutral Gray N1? Will this be good for both "cool" shading and "warm" shading?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Thank you for this! (Is SU! WW cardstock coated?) I'll try the coloring in circles ... sounds way better than running in circles, which I've been known to do! LOL!

BTW ... I'm guessing your avitar is a self portrait with Copics ... yes?

ETA: Oops! Never mind about the SU! cardstock question. I see it's been discussed earlier in the thread and I just went past too fast.

I'm very new too but I do have the R85, YG95 and G14 and I like them all. YG95 is an exact match to old olive. I think the R85 is darker than Regal Rose but I still think it goes well together. I think G14 matches green galore pretty closely. If you use more than one coat, it becomes darker. This is just my opinion because I am new, but I did a color test before I responded.

Just a reminder that my colors were compared using PTI Cardstock.

They appear different on Geogia Pacific! The colors are slightly grayed out and a bit darker on the GP than they are on the PTI.

If you are using another brand of paper the colors could be different yet.

I use GP. I didn't know that PTI would be different. I have some PTI. I'll have to try it! Thanks for posting your color comparison chart. It makes a wonderful reference.

Ha ha.. I wish, he's a character from a CGI horror movie. I'm a fan of the games and movies of that particular genre.

Hi ladies,
I just put in an order for 38 copics yesterday! I can't wait to play. Thanks so much for all the good feedback on colors and combos and techniques. I'll try to post some cards (if they turn out!!).

It's funny; I probably have over 200 Copics, but I don't have about half the ones you listed!

Hope you are including a colorless blender in your list.

General comments: I didn't look for an earlier post; so I don't know if you are choosing the colors for one specific project. If not, I would suggest going for paler pastel colors; blending is more of a challenge with the dark ones. It reminds me of looking at a basic little box of Crayolas and attempting to blend those colors. There's a lot of yellows; I probably started with only one and got by fine. For a basic red, I prefer R27 Cadmium Red over R29 Lipstick Red (which has more of a fuchsia color). I use BG10 Cool Shadow (sky) a lot and use browns a lot (E55 Light Camel and E57 Light Walnut). Your projets will probably look better with just a few colors rather than trying to cover the whole spectrum. Oh, well, you could just choose blindly....because as soon as you get whatever colors you choose....you will start your list for the next must haves. As everyone says, it is addicitive.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have a set of 12 "pastel" colors that includes some of the ones you mentioned like BG10 and some like E33. I was wanting to go for some SU color matches since that is mostly the cardstock I use. And I was trying to get a full spectrum like you thought, but I know you are right about then not being happy with 12 colors that can't really be used together! Then I will just have to get more, right?

About the R29, I was going for that one because it was listed as the one matching SU Real Red. Is R27 the same tone but lighter than R29? Can I get it to be a dark red like Real Red by coloring a couple layers of it?

I wanted to share one of my first copic cards. I sat down and colored about 20 images but only put together 2 or three cards so far.

Here is a photo for comparison on that one.

I chose R29 as the match for Real Red because it is a shade lighter and when you soak the color in it is a perfect match. R27 has a slightly orange-y tint...and doesn't get to the true Real Red color no mater how many times you go over it.

Hopefully this helps!

Thank you so much! That helps a lot to see the comparison.

Here is a list of colors I am thinking of getting. Do you have any suggestions for lighter versions that still "coordinate" well with each of these? Or should I leave some of the lighter colors as is since they are very light to begin with?

*Apricot Appeal / YR21 Cream
*Almost Amethyst / B63 Light Hydrangea
*Green Galore / G14 Apple Green
*Real Red / R29 Lipstick Red
*Lovely Lilac / BV17 Deep Reddish Blue
*Ballet Blue / B23 Phthalo Blue
*So Saffron / Y21 Buttercup Yellow
*Regal Rose / R85 Rose Red
*More Mustard / YR23 Yellow Ochre
*Pumpkin Pie / YR15 Yellow Pumpkin (one shade lighter than the matching YR16 just so it might be more usable? Or maybe I will go with YR14 based on your suggestion.)
*Old Olive / Y95 Pale Olive
*Gray for shading copic Neutral Gray N1? Will this be good for both "cool" shading and "warm" shading?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Yes if you go over it a couple times it is almost dead on with the Pumpkin Pie cardstock. I don't have YR15 but do have YR12 and it looks pretty close with the SU marker. My marker is lighter than the cardstock is. Personally I like the darker cardstock better than my SU marker. Therefore I get a better match with the YR14 than SU's. Does that make sense? I use Papertrey white cs if that helps.
