Card Stock Scraps Organization??

How do you store your cs scraps? Right now I have mine by general color (ie blues, greens, yellows...) but that makes it difficult to find the exact one you want. I'm ready to do something different but wanted to see if there were any great ideas out there!

Thanks for your help! :)

robynstamps 07-20-2007 06:34 AM

Mine go right in with my cardstock. They sit on top of the full sheets. That works best for me because I can actually see what I have and use it first instead of cutting a brand new sheet.

I bought a Cropper Hopper hanging file system... I put plastic 12x12 bags (Close to my Heart) in them, each one having a different color cs (CTMH divides their colors into 5 groups, so I bought 5 folders). I keep it right by my table, so I can use those scraps first.

I put mine by color family in manilla folders. The folders are in hanging file plastic totes with wheels - keep all my cardstock in hanging folders under my worktable where they're handy and save from any light.

mkndb78 07-20-2007 07:20 AM

I have hanging folders - one for each color. I put my scraps at the front of the folder in a page protector. This is the best way I have ever found to store scraps, and I always try to use them when I make cards. I can finally throw away the scraps that are way too small for anything.

You guys are awesome. I'm in the middle of reorganizing my craft room right now, and took a break to see if anyone here has any ideas for storing scraps.
Thanks.

I have two accordian file folders from M's (fits 12" paper), one for cardstock scraps and the other for patterned paper scraps, separated by color.

I also have 2 plastic embroidery floss containers with clear pull out drawers from M's that have my small scraps...nothing bigger than 2 x 4. I found having these little scraps in the accordian file folder box they just fell to the bottom and kind of got lost in the pile. This way I can easily see the itty bitty scraps and they're great for matting sentiments, for punches, etc.

This way I waste very little paper. I bought all these containers on sale at M's with coupons so they were pretty cheap.

I put mine in gallon size bags according to color family. I keep the bags on my desk top and always go there first before heading to the shelf for a full sheet of cardstock.

My way probably is not what you are looking for. I have a 3 drawer plastic thing - the drawers will hold 8.5x11 paper. the drawers are for: warm, cool, and neutral. When I need a scrap I just pull out the whole drawer and dig around in it. Sometimes what I think I want is not what I end up using because I'll see something better. I have finally stopped saving every scrap too. it has to be 2x2ish.

Lisa62 07-20-2007 08:58 AM

I put my in an accordian folder also. Then I used the tab punch cut a color tab using that and stapeled it to the top of each section. Makes it much easier to find the colors when you need them quick rather than searching thru each section to find it.

I wish I had the room Robyn has I like her idea. I cut way to many new sheets before using up my scrap. My scraps just keep on piling up. Maybe someday I can have a nice paper assorment like Robyn's My 12x12's and 8 1/2's are stored in accordian folders and the cm 8 1/2 by 11 zip bags with the wire crates and dividers. Those are also all color coded.

But when my kids need paper I make them use the scraps.

This is exactly what I do!!! Like any organizational system, it won't work for everyone, but it sure does work for me! I put a full sheet of cardstock in the page protector as well. It helps 'hold up' the page protector with the scraps. I also have each page protector labeled with the color. When I make a card, I pull out the page protectors of the colors I want to use. I find myself using mostly scraps, except for when I need the card base. HTH!!!

Thanks for all the great tips! It really helps!

dianerh 07-20-2007 08:41 PM

Here's a link to some pix about how I store mine. The link goes to one pic with an explanation, but then there are actually 3 other pix and some more text too.

HTH! ;-)

dianerh 07-20-2007 08:41 PM

<blush> the link would help, wouldn't it!?!?! ;-)

My scrap card is sorted into pizza boxes which I bought at my LSS. They were only $2AU each and I have 6. They are sorted into colours, black/white,pink/red/purple etc. I have tried a few different methods previously but this is the one which really works for me. It takes up only a small space and I always check here before cutting into a new piece.

mkndb78 07-21-2007 02:33 AM

OOH! Thanks for helping me get to the next level of organization. I am going to put a full sheet in each page protector! Now, why didn't I think of that? THANKS!

All of my cardstock is in hanging file folders as well. I just put all of my scraps in a manilla file folder in the hanging folder that houses that color. That way, I just pull out the manilla folder first and check out what scraps I've got, then go to the full sheets...

twink62 07-21-2007 05:09 AM

I use gallon bags too. This way I can see what is in the bag.

It's labled Baggies for me. I pull from the baggies first, I am so surprised how much cardstock I have saved since I started storing it this way. When I used file folders the little pieces were lost in the bottom, and I hated digging for them.

diannep575 07-21-2007 05:33 AM

I do the same thing as Shelley1010. I keep a milk box crate right next to me with the hanging file folders and labeled folders in there in alphabetical order. I always go there first to see what I have. Amazing how many scraps you accumulate!! Good luck on your system!!

Marshaspeck50 07-21-2007 06:09 AM

card scraps

I do the same thing as Tami. I did have them more organized but then I started getting card scraps from different companies and you can't always find a match to file them a different way.

sunnywl 07-21-2007 06:16 AM

I do the same thing as Shelley1010 and Diannep. each hanging folder is labeled and has its own color in full sheets in ABC order then after that, I have hanging folders in scraps in the same order. I always check the scrap folders first before going to the full sheet folders. I waste a lot less cardstock that way. I LOVE this system! This file is right under my desk that I can easily pull out.

amylou 07-21-2007 07:30 AM

I have 2 of those plastic shoebox rubber container thingies on my desk. I keep all my scraps in individual storage baggies with the name on the front of the baggie with a post-it note. That way, when I flip through I know which color is what. I also organize them by color family.

dacpam 07-21-2007 07:58 AM

I do the same thing as a lot of folks but want to add one thing. I keep the scraps in an open-topped plastic file box. Each color has it's own hanging file which has a tab in the color with the name written on it.

Here is my catch. I keep this file box under my table right next to my right foot so as I am working, I just pull out the color I need. It is always handy and I find that I check my scraps first. Over the years, I have found that I use way more scraps this way for it is easy and convenient. I put anything under a half sheet in these files and boy do I save a lot of time, hassle and paper with this system.

I have to also add this is part of a cart I bought many years ago at Costco. It is rolling and has this file drawer on the bottom that pulls out. On top of that is a shallow drawer about 5" deep that I keep all white and cream scraps in. (I just throw them in there) This drawer slides out also. The top of this is another 5" open top stationary drawer that I keep lots of things in like dimentionals, glue dots, etc. Things that I reach for all the time but don't want on top of my table but need all the time. The whole unit slides perfectly under the table but it is literally there all the time so nothing is a hassle. I wish Costco would have these again for I would buy another for my left side!!!! Maybe you can find them somewhere else.

Hope this helps a bit. I am just crazy about organizing all my stuff!

Doodah 07-21-2007 08:03 AM

WOW...I'm a little embarrassed I just throw mine in a big box!!! lol

AGJESSEE 07-22-2007 01:14 PM

yeaup me too Debs. I have two school boxes one big for big scraps and one little box for itty bitty scraps. all colors are together though. I keep them on my scrap table all the time so I know to look there first. I've used my scraps for everything and i save even the tinyest scrap you never know what you'll be using it for. I did a 2 classes using nothing but scraps from my box.

Scrapping&Stamping 07-22-2007 02:10 PM

I use one of those cropper hopper paper holders (like in the SU catty) and inside of it I have 6 folders also made by cropper hopper. I have one for each color family, neutrals/in colors, and one for patterned paper.

Tamschro 07-22-2007 08:26 PM

YOu guys motivated me today. I used to throw my scraps in a big box.... I now sorted them by colour into Manilla envelopes. :) It has saved me time on the cards I made today... just dig through a particular colour instead of sifting through piles of scraps.. having to flip them over... :) Thanks!

munchkin25 07-23-2007 01:46 PM

i store my scraps in two ways, i have a plastic rubbermaid container, shoe box size, and i throw all long thin scraps in there. i use these for simple borders or for paper folding.
i then have 3 ring binders with page protectors. each color has its own page protector. i have one for cs and one for pp. i check the binders first, and since they arent that big i can stand them up on the table against the wall, so they are pretty much out of the way but yet still in arms length.
since my daughter likes to help, she knows to reach for the binders first.
sadly though i need a new way of storing my 12x12 paper. so suggestions will help. they are in a file box but that isnt working for me as they are beginning to bend.
hope that i was able to help some of you.

Furph's wife 07-23-2007 01:57 PM

I have Sterilite drawers that are 12x12 size and you get 3 of them in a unit. I have a few of these and store 2-3 colors together I have my 12x12, 81/2x11 and scraps(in a gallon sized baggie) in a drawer. All my c/s is in one place.
Then I have drawers for non Su paper and they go by pink RYOGBIV and the scraps are organized by solids or patterns. Then there is a drawer for SU pattern paper and non Su pattern paper that I bought that goes together, but if I cut into any of that the scraps get filed in the ROYGBIV drawers.

fun4gwen 07-23-2007 07:22 PM

I organize my scraps behind each foler. My SU paper is in a vanilla folder with each color and than behind it I put a folder with three sides so they don't fall out. If I have a chance I will post a picture tomorrow. That way I just go to that color and pull out the folder behind. I know I didn't explain that very well so hopefully a picture will help.
