I've never used SU watercolor crayons but have used other brands and I found the Gelatos a little thicker, creamier consistency and if you're wanting them to color directly onto the rubber of a stamp I had better luck with them than w/ watercolor crayons, they are a little more waxy than a lipstick but pretty close. I did find for general coloring in of images crayons seem to blend and bleed just a bit easier for me.
I think they do pretty much the same things, if you already have one there's not a whole lot of need for the other.
I know that Technique Tuesday is also selling a watercolor type crayon. Wonder how different that is from the Gelatos and Stampin' Up watercolor crayons.
I only can speak about Stampin' Up! Water Color Crayons and I love them. My customers think I'm funny because I always ask them to pull the color off the flat end of the crayons so I can keep the point sharp, lol. Anyway, they make for beautiful colored images.
I'm with Scrapjanny, I haven't found the need for a fixative.
Paula- I've got three different brands of watercolors crayons, all high quality art brands and I find they are all pretty much the same expect for color selection, I'll mix and match them and can't really tell a difference.
btw one thing I do really love about the Gelatos is the tube they come in, most other crayons have a paper wrapping like a regular crayon and can break easily or get messy, the Gelato lipstick like tube solves this problem.
I have a questons for those of you who bought both the Gelatos and or the Stampers Big Brush Pens. How did you decide which product(s) to invest in? Why did you choose both or one over the other? I am trying to decide if I should invest in both or just a little of both. your thoughts???

I just bought an older set of SU crayons and was wondering how you sharpen them? Also one color is split from the point down. Do these dry out over time?
You can sharpen them like you would a regular crayon. However, you peel back the paper and KEEP the shavings b/c that is PURE pigment/color. Do NOT waste it. I think that is why "inkyimages" commented on pulling the color from the flat end opposite the point. They do not dry out, similar to how chalks can get crumbled but they still work just fine. I think most people keep the crayon right in the case and just pull the color off w/ a damp brush of some kind.

Both are very different products. The Brush Pens are like big markers, perfect for covering large areas and also great for coloring directly onto rubber. The color is pretty saturated and doesn't blend a lot.
The Gelatos are kind of similar to watercolor crayons, can be used with or without water and are blend-able, they have a creamy feel and look to them.
So it really depends on the look and feel you are going for.
Watercolor Wonder Crayons are one of my favorite products we sell!!! You do not need a fixative over the top and can color wonderfully right onto the stamp. I wonder if the previous poster had an older set and maybe they reformulated them at some point because mine are very creamy! As a matter of fact, one of my favorite techniques is to color directly onto a solid stamp, then mist with water, and stamp onto watercolor paper! It looks like you are such an artist and just painted a canvas or something.
I just used the Gelatos tonight, and I'm in love! The color is more intense and it's a little more versatile than the SU watercolor crayons. I found the SU crayons really only worked well on watercolor paper. But the Gelatos work on just about anything.

I have lots of gelatos and a few of the big brush pens (including white and black). The big brush pens are filled with india ink.
I recently used the gelatos with the big brush pens to make an atc for a technique swap and I love the technique. When the gelatos are used dry, it's easy to move and manipulate the ink from the pens on top of the gelatos. I love the look that I got and the technique was so easy, just moving the gelatos color around with your fingers and then using the pens to add depth and highlights.
You'll see what I'm talking about if you watch this video which is where I saw the technique (Darlene DeVrie's youtube channel):
