DIY Distress Ink pads with Metallic Inks

I am looking into getting some metallic ink pads. But I am wondering can I get DIY Distress Ink pads and then use a different brand off Ink refills preferrably the metallic ink refills. Has anyone ever done this.

I'm thinking that you would need the DIY Distress Oxide pads, as opposed to regular Distress, since every metallic ink pad I've ever seen was foam, not felt/fabric. It should work, though. I've made many, many regular DIY pads and they work just as well as "store-bought". Good luck, and circle back to tell us how it went if you decide to do this!
