Default Help Cant Find a Good Cutter!

I love personal cutters with the slide....but I have bought two diff. kinds now and one even said it cut perfect everytime...but it doesnt and it seems to fray the paper and the blade is new.....I just wish someone would come out with a metal instead of plastic slide then the cuts would be perfect because the plastic wont bend....Anyone know of one??? or what I can do to get straighter lines?

It may be your paper and not the cutter. Whisper White frays all the time with my cutters (SU trimmer, Fiskars rotary and my Carl Rotary) but no other paper does.

I have the 12" personal trimmer and the rotary trimmer, both Fiskars brand. I like the convenience of the personal trimmer in terms of size and portability, but the cutting quality is not so great. I have the same problem with my paper fraying... and I go through blades like crazy. If I just have a few cuts to make, that's what I will use, but if I have a lot of cutting, or need a cleaner, more precise cut, I use the rotary trimmer. The blades seem to stay sharp for a very long time. In fact, the only thing that I've had to replace very often is the hard plastic thing that runs under the paper and blade. It's 4-sided, so I can flip it quite a few times, but after a while it gets really worn out and then you don't get as good of cuts and it will have to be replaced.

I just saw earlier someone posted an X-Acto Laser Trimmer and I'm interested in learning more about that. Did a search online and really couldn't find any user reviews, so maybe we can fond someone on here to give us the scoop on that.

To add a couple comments of things I've found helpful in using cutters.

If using a guillotine cutter, bring the blade down straight, don't wobble it. Also hold your paper firmly with your other hand. Bring blade handle down in one slow but steady motion.....straight! I also find that the more pages I cut with this type of cutter the poorer the cut is. I don't cut more than 2 sheets at a time.

If using a rotary cutter (no matter what brand) start with the blade at the top and cut down. Don't cut from the bottom up. Bring cutter down in a smooth motion, not jerking it as you slide it down. Also hold your paper firmly with the other hand.

When using either, be certain that your paper is lined up straight against the grid marks on the flat bed of the cutter, not the bottom ledge of the cutter. Also, blades do dull rather quickly when cutting paper, change blade regularly. Also for the Fiskers rotary cutter that has the long square black piece, that also will effect your cutting quality. Rotate that and replace when the strip gets too deeply cut.
