Is there a way to cut words and not just letters. It came witha font cartridge? |
You can cut multiple items at once, so you could type in the word and the Cricut will cut out all the letters. Using Cricut Craft Room you can weld letters together to make words a single cut. Also many of the cartridges come with words and phrases in various styles.

Also are other company's cartridges compat or do I only use the Cricut ones? |
Only Cricut. You just bought into a Cricut only system. No third party cartridges or computer software will work with the Cricut.

Also what are the must have ones. Not into kids or cutzy stuff |
Totally depends on what you're into. The
Cricut site has a catalog of available cartridges. My very strong recommendation is to watch Michael's and Jo-Ann's for sales. You can easily get cartridges for ~$30 if you are patient.

Can I cut using a standard sheet 8/12 by 11 paper? |
Yes. You can stick whatever size paper you like to the mat.

Now for software do I need that and of so what and where to get that. Can I use regular clip art and does it have to be just simple outline stuff etc? |
You can only use Cricut's software,
Cricut Craft Room with the Cricut. ProvoCraft (the manufacturer) sued all the third-party software makers into stop supporting the Cricut. Craft Room is free. You can only use "clip art" that is on cartridges or built in to Craft Room.
I hope this helps.
