ATG pros & cons

I'm thinking about buying the Scotch ATG. How do you like it? What don't you like about it. Where can you get refills? Thanks for your input.

I have an older model - the ATG 700. It uses the 1/2" tape. I didn't realize it was large until I was reading all the posts here. Honestly? I LOVE IT! It came with a second roll so I'm not looking for replacements just yet. If I apply glue and there's too much I use my finger to either tuck it under or roll it up and peel it away.

Good luck on your search and congratulations when you purchase.

I have the red one ATG714? I LOVE it! I buy my refills at www.framingsupplies.com I usually order for some friends as well and we can get the cheaper price and share shipping. But even if I have to order on my own it is still the cheapest I ahve found and they are super fast!

The only con was it didnt have a lid, so I had my hubby make me one and now I can tote it around without messing up my tape. LOVE, LOVE ,LOVE it.

The only thing I usually hear people say are that is big, yes it is but it is light weight and super easy to get used to. There is a new small gun I think called easy glider it is only $15 and the refills are $8-9 for 40 feet. The ATG is about $40 and the refills are $2.40 for 36 YARDS = 108 feet. So me it's a no brainer, can't beat the price and it holds very very well. I use it place of sticky tape alot of time and never had a problem with the hold.

Can you tell I love it?

I am another that loves my ATG, it has saved me so much in the cost of snail adhesive. I figured it out that just in Christmas cards alone I would have had to buy 20 snail adhesives compared to the 1 roll that I went through of ATG tape. Snail refills are around $8 each ATG refills are around $3 each, major savings. The only problem that I have with the ATG is that I have to lay it on its side on my craft table and it does take up space that way, but I found a ATG holder that someone has on here (sorry I can't remember the name of the person) so when DH has some time he is going to make me one. I would recommend the ATG to anyone, the initial cost is alot but the amount that you save in just the first couple of uses is well worth it in my opinion.

I could be Shannon's ATG twin! I also have the red Scotch ATG 714 which I purchased from framingsupplies. com two years ago. I LOVE it, and it saves me so much $$$ on tape that it paid for itself! The tape quality is terrific - I buy the 924 - and you just can't beat 36 yards for $2.40. I usually buy a dozen rolls to get the cheaper price and that way I'm also saving on postage as I don't have to reorder for a looong time! :-D In the first year after I purchased mine, my sister and two of my stamping friends also bought ATGs (same style from the same place) and they are extremely satisfied too.

I have the 714 and don't like it and don't use it.

Cons....Very large, bulky and heavy compared to double stick tape on a roll. It is difficult to get it EXACTLY on the edge of your paper and also stop it EXACTLY on the edge. Certainly not the easiest thing to store due to the size of it, no stand or case for it. If the tape comes off the roller, you loose a sizeable amount getting it back on again.

Just my opinions. I'll stick with my Scor-Tape.

There is a knack to using the ATG that I just don't have!!

No CONS for me. :) I can't believe how much money I've saved with this darn thing.

jkstampin 03-23-2009 01:45 PM

No cons for me at all. I love it, and don't mind the size at all! I buy the refills from the tape depot.

Hiding in My Craft Room 03-23-2009 02:00 PM

No cons for me either! I bought the ATG 714, the red one, about two years ago and love, love, love it! It stores easily enough for me just putting the handle into my organizer that sits on my desk. I recently started buying refills from the tape depot.com and bought the ATG 50, the blue one for my 4 year old daughter, who has no problems using it. I got sick of messy, dried up glue sticks and for the price of refills it is actually cheaper!!!! and soooo much better.

ctychick 03-23-2009 02:05 PM

I have the 700 and love it. There IS a knack to it and it does take a little practice to get it to start and stop exactly where you want it. But the cost savings and amazing stickiness of the ATG make it a must-have imo.

SKICIO 03-23-2009 02:18 PM

I have 2 ATG 700s, one for the 1/2" and the other has an adaptor for 1/4". The reason being is that they didn't have the 714 back then. I can't scrap or make cards without it. And like the others, I buy my refills at framingsupplies.com. I have saved a lot of money from buying other adhesives when I swtiched to the ATG :D

lwfmtta 03-23-2009 02:58 PM

I just love it and resisted forever because of the size
Gave in because it is so much cheaper to use plus I had the opportunity to try it

It is large but very lightweight. I take it with me to crops all the time

I use the ATG 714 with 3m gold tape (1/4 inch) 36 yards
most taperunners are 60 feet or less.

It is also very strong!!! Much stronger than any runner I have used including the glue glider pro (I also bought that but it is much more expensive because the refills are expensive)

sprtchick 03-23-2009 03:03 PM

I have a 714 also for about 2 years now....I love love love it. My hubby looked at the stand that is being sold for it on line and made one for me just like it for way less than half the cost. I painted and put some In Full Bloom stickers from the kit on it and then Modge Podge it. It looks so great and my ATG has a home on my desk. A couple of my friends saw the stand and hubby made me a few more that I decorated and gave as gifts...Would never part with the ATG 714.
Blessings.

flamingolady 03-23-2009 04:04 PM

Okay, okay I think you all sold me on it. However, does Un-du work on the adhesive? In case I have to do some reverse-scrapping?

isewquilts2 03-23-2009 04:24 PM

Everyone else has clearly articulated the pros, and I agree with them. It's one of the best craft investments I've ever made.

Only one "con" for me--it's tough to use on small pieces (less than 1" or so).

heather30 03-23-2009 04:40 PM

I love it and would never go back to the old mono adhesive I used before. I can't think of a con, except I thought it was a bit tricky to figure out how to load the first few times, but now it comes quite easily. I have the red one that's I think 1/4 tape. I also buy refills at framing supplies and buy a couple boxes at a time!

KraftyChic 03-23-2009 04:46 PM

I have the ATG 714 too and just love it! You really can't beat the price of the refills. I also bought the adapter so I can use two sizes now! Recently purchased the Glue Glider Pro for 40% off at HL. Got it mostly to take when traveling & scrapping. Haven't used it yet, but it appears to be a smaller version of the ATG!

iluvpaper2 03-23-2009 05:35 PM

Love it! The only con (if is a con) is I usually look at the video (on the framingsupplies site) to load a new roll because I can't remember how. :-)

Curly Chick 03-23-2009 05:59 PM

I have the 714 and love it. I totally agree with what everyone else said, so I won't repeat it. :D

Another satisfied ATG 714 user. I have had mine for a little over a year, and can't imagine using anything else. There is a learning curve, but once you get the knack of how to load and hold it, I know you will love it. And like several people have said, the savings are certainly worth learning how to us it IMO.

sweetiepeas 03-23-2009 06:53 PM

I built a stand for mine and it works great and I always know where my gun is. Not that it could get lost on my desk :) another plus. I have seen some people using a coffee cup as a holder. Seemed to work fine.

Curly Chick 03-23-2009 06:56 PM

I will add on pro that no one has mentioned. This is the first adhesive that I don't lose on my desk! :)

I've had my ATG for maybe 2 months now - LOVE it. I don't know how I could go so long without it.

I put the tape in as soon as it was out of the box - super easy. And I've refilled it once already and it was quick and easy again.

I had heard all the stories about it being bulky and heavy - I find it pretty lightweight and easy to use.

As for removing any adhesive where you don't want it - I use one of those adhesive remover erasers that SU sells (rubbing your finger over it would prolly work too) and it works like a charm.

And I've tried to pull apart layers of cardstock that I stuck together with my ATG - if you do it immediately after sticking it down you might be able to reposition - after that it's stuck for good. I always end up tearing the CS if I try to pull anything apart!!

LOVE my ATG! :D

SKICIO 03-23-2009 07:37 PM

Yes, Un-do does work on ATG adhesive. It has never failed me if I make a mistake on my scrapbooking or cardmaking and want to reposition photos or cardstock. I have never had any problems refilling my ATG gun. I actually made a video tutorial about in my craft homepage:

http://craftski.multiply.com/video/i...Scotch_ATG_700

At first, I was having a hard time storing my 2 ATG guns. And I wasn't willing to pay for the custom made ATG gun holder they were selling on ebay. Until I finally found the best solution for me, and it's just a pen organizer I bought from the 100 Yen store in Japan. It kina looks like a holster on top of my craft desk. You can see it here:

http://craftski.multiply.com/photos/...ATG_Gun_Holder

I'm sure you can find something similar in the dollar stores here in the US.

Hope that helps :)

My3LittleMonkeys 03-24-2009 04:05 AM

I did a comparison of some ATGs on my blog. Here is the original post and here is a follow up based on questions I received.

You NEED one! :)

scrappykat 03-24-2009 04:13 AM

I'm another one who loves the ATG 714 and it's kind-of embarrassing because I work in an LSS! It's more embarrassing though when displays we've used regular scrapbook adhesive on, start to fall apart. Mine never do, yet it's not too strong---if you don't smooth it down hard, there's still some wiggle room to move it around, etc. I'd have to say this is the best scrapbook purchase I've ever made!
