I adore my DYMO LetraTag label maker. It is the non-crafty tool that is indispensable in my craft room. I have ADHD and if I don't label every box and bin I have, I will never find what I need and will spend hours getting sidetracked. It is also useful for labeling my clear stamps when I put them in Avery Elle pouches. I don't know what I would do without it.
There is one thing I don't like about my label maker, though, it does not have a QWERTY keyboard. I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to a new one for that reason, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have suggestions for a new label maker that might be a good replacement?
I really like the Brother P-Touch machine. It has a QWERTY keyboard, but it's small so you can't type like a typewriter. I'd like a machine with harder keys - Ptouch are squishier than I like but otherwise a great machine
There's a little larger Dymo that has a qwerty keyboard. Or a Brother P-Touch. I really like my Brother P-Touch Cube. I use the app on my phone to create a label and it prints it wirelessly.
I also vote for the Brother P Touch. I'm on my 2nd one now (a D400), and my first one gave me years of good service. Most P Touch labelers are NOT handheld. You need to sit them on a table. I highly recommend that you get the AC adapter if you get one of these machines. The newer ones eat up batteries faster than a teenage football player eats up pizza!
Amazon does have some handheld P Touch, but I don't have any experience with them.
Dea, you reminded me I also have a large, ancient P-Touch with a non-qwerty keyboard. I got the newer one four years ago because not having a qwerty keyboard was driving me crazy for a big organizing project, but it’s handy for large (1”) bold labels on bins in the garage - can easily read them on high shelves from far away.
Brother P-Touch model PT-D400. Easy to operate and refill cartridges available everywhere in store and online. 2 size strips 1/2" and 3/8". I use black on white but colors available. Can see the labels at a distance and fit on spine of DVD and CD cases.
Another vote for Brother p-touch. They are often on sale at Staples. I don't use my very often but it is super handy to grab and use when needed. DD uses it to label folders and binder dividers for school and it makes everything look neat and professional.

I have two different P-touch machines I use, one at home and one at the library. They make nice labels, but I find the software completely non-intuitive, and the supplies can be expensive. The best deal I have found on cartridges is at costco, which is MUCH less expensive than anywhere else. If you know someone with a p-touch that you can try out, I’d recommend asking to give it a try to see, if you are satisfied. Also compare the cost of the cartridges.
I got my Ptouch at costco years ago so I have no idea if the model is the same. I like it a lot but keep in mind, like printers, the cartridges are expensive. Esp if you do a lot of printing.
I now get my cartridges on Amazon for a lot less. Some people only want to use brand parts but in this case I have had good fortune at a fraction of the cost. I see my supplier isnt there now but if you ck them you will see lots of choices.
Thank you for all the feedback. It looks like I should be checking out a P-touch. I will look into this and compare cartridge costs with the one I have now. I think that may be the tipping point of whether I go for the new one. I hate a non-qwerty keyboard, but I also don't want to break the bank on cartridges either. I appreciate all of the help.
I have the P touch, and I use the non Brother cartridges from Amazon. Jennifer McGuire turned me on to these - much cheaper and work just fine for me. Just so you know, you don't have to use the name brand refills - the others work well, too.

Some (all?) label makers can be used in a way to save tape when typing more than one label. I made a little laminated card with instructions as a reminder.
For my model (PDT210), here's how you'd set it up:
- Label (green button)
- Margin
- OK (white button)
- Chain Print
- OK
-----
Type the first label
- Print
- Print
- Esc
Clear typing and type the next label, then repeat:
- Print
- Print
- Esc and so on.
When done, press the green hinged cutting button. Use scissors to cut each label.
Some non-Brother tape makers are excellent and some maybe not so hot. Read reviews and check return policies. I've been happy with PtouchDirect.com (They are not P-Touch.) They provide compatibility cards with an order, and have some tapes P-Touch doesn't make.
I wanted white text on narrow clear tape for the gray Distress Oxide inks. They had a .35" tape. I also have .23" in other colors from them and from P-Touch.
BTW, while some of the newer P-Touch machines are not hand held, they are small. Mine is about 6" x 5.5" and *roughly* 2-3/4" thick at the top, narrowing down to 3/4" at the bottom. Because it's curved, it's very comfortable to hold in one hand and type with the other, not that I do that much.
I use the PTouch also, and use the chain print that bjeans mentioned. You wouldn't believe how much tape is saved. I use the stamp storage pockets from Hobby Lobby, similar to the Tim Holtz ones, except these have tabs at the top. By using smaller print, 2 lines and chain printing, I was able to label all my stamp and die sets with just one cartridge.
I got mine for $10 at Staples and bought the power adapter. I have to label everything too, but my reason is... old age. My mind still thinks I'm thirty-five, but my body and brain just start laughing.

I also vote for the P-Touch. I've had mine for many years. The refill tape cartridges are expensive at my local office supply store ($22.97 for ONE!), but I get them on Ebay for $15.00 for five.

I have had two Brother label makers, and the P Touch is by far my favorite. The keyboard is a great feature and with several fonts to choose from in a variety of sizes I can always get the perfect label.
