airbrush compressor to use with Copics
Can anyone tell me what kind of compressor they use for the airbrushing techniques when they use Copics. I really don't want to spend a lot. I've checked the Sparmax and it's above my budget. Anything under $100 would work for me.
Thanks in advance. Linda frolm Clinton :D |
Harbor Freight (a tool store online and onground) carries an excellent one for around $50 plus they often have sales. I do not have the model number, but I'm sure you can find it if you just compare the output to the SparMax

Hi Linda,
Most craft/hobby compressors will work for your purpose... just make sure that the PSI is between 40 and 60. You can also check out hobby and model building stores for a good selection. |
compressors for Copics
Thanks Colleen for your help. You have saved me a lot of $$$

oh this is wonderful advice...I just saw the price on the one at Hobby Lobby and was shocked that it cost hundreds..like one for $249 and one for $349!
blessings. |
If you are planning to use it for Copics make sure that the connection can hold onto a pen. I haven't played with a compressor since I became certified. The one that Marianne used was a Sparmax. I haven't looked into getting one lately.
Last time I started to look into getting one I looked at CarpieDiem and then at Oozak. HTH, Ginger |
I use a small compressor that DH gave me. It has a regulator that will limit the pressure in the hose to any amount that you set it at while the pressure in the tank may be much more. This way it doesn't turn on as often. :D
I didn't think I needed it but I'm really enjoying it. |
I have just bought a compressor from Harbor Freight Central Pneumatic 1/8 HP Oiless Airbrush Compressor Item Number 93657 on sale 49.99 and also ordered the ASB-3 Grip and Air Adaptor 28.59 from icopic. It does work! Yeah!!!!! I am just learning (when I have time) to use the copics
Hope this info helps! Hugs,Connie |
Harbor Freight Compressor
Hi Connie,
I just bought the same exact outfit you did. I ordered my compressor online so I don't exactly have it yet. But I do have the hose, and the set ABS-3 that will hopefully go with the compressor. I ordered that from OOzak on I think it was Monday and I received it yesterday (Wed). They certainly are fast with their deliveries. So here's wishing us both luck with our new toys. My husband airbrushed a lot for his art projects and personal use. I asked if his unit would work with ink refills like Copic various inks and the ShinHan Art refill inks which are coming out soon and the ranger reinkers and the other stamp pad reinkers I have. He said as long as they are all thin like water, it will work, but might be a bit more clean up than Copics marker airbrushing. I think I might give it a try sometime! He uses a kit which looks like the one in the attached link and the little compressor from Harbor Frieght. He actually uses "dye" which I think might just be the same as ink.
Might be a less expensive way to get into airbrushing! Amazon.com: Professional Air Brush Kit: Home Improvement |
I just found this, there is a review which says they use it for scrapbooks and card making! My husband has used food coloring for his artwork also :).
But I think it would be worth it to buy the food color and refill those bottles with various ink or reinkers and then just make your own labels for them. :) Amazon.com: Airbrush Cake Decorating System Precision Dual-Action Gravity Feed Airbrush Set with Mini Air Compressor Plus 4 Americolor AmeriMist Airbrush Food Colors: Arts, Crafts & Sewing |
How are the shipping charges at Harbor Freight? Has anyone found this at the Harbor Freight stores, or is it only online? Thanks for your help

I got my air compressor at the Harbor Freight store. They constantly have 20% off coupons in the paper too. Good luck! |
I am considering this compressor from Oozak. They say it's better than the Sparmax? Anybody have this one?
PAADA300R-COPIC | COPIC ABS - PAASCHE DA300R Compressor w/COPIC Compatible 10' Braided Hose | Oozak.com I checked the reviews of the Harbor Freight one and a few people said the air runs out right away. Maybe that's just for bigger jobs? Thanks in advance for your advise. |

Silly question, but for those of you with the Harbor Freight compressor, does it have the auto shut off? I looked at the description, but couldn't find it in there. By auto shut off I mean does the compressor stop as soon as you release the trigger? I know the Sparmax and the Paasche say they do that.
TIA for your help and info. |
Hi Shari.
I'm sorry but I can't answer your question as to wether the Harbor Freight compressor has an automatic shutoff or not. I'm still waiting to receive mine. ; ^ ( Linda from Clinton |
Whoo Hoo!! I am so excited, I decided to order the Paasche compressor from Oozak. It was hard to hit that "submit" button on the online order, but I did it! Can't wait for my little machine to arrive now. Could be awhile, has to cross the border and come through Customs to get to me in Canada. But, the extra $30 for shipping was worth it. The LS stores here want $350 for the Sparmax! What a rip off. I paid $150 + $30 shipping for the Paasche. Much better deal. Can't wait to get airbrushing!
|
Sharilea, when you get your Paasche compressor could you post about it? I'm looking into getting that one from Oozak too, i just haven't read any reviews on it. Thanks in advance!! :)

Well, I don't have my compressor from Oozak yet, but I had to post about their great customer service! He phoned and left me a message yesterday to tell me that he hasn't shipped it yet because he found out the UPS would charge $30 to ship it to Canada, plus when it gets here there would be taxes, duty and an additional $40 frieght charge! He found a much cheaper alternative so he wanted to get my "okay" to switch to that shipping method. How nice is that? He could have just shipped it to me, the freight charge isn't his problem. I really appreciated his extra effort on that!
Now, hopefully my compressor gets here soon and I can post a review! |

Anyway, I will post a review once I get it all hooked up. Should be later this week. |
7 Kids College Fund has the Sparmax plus the ABS-3 attachment for $189.99 and their shipping is reasonable.
My LSS here in Canada came pretty close to their price ($230.00) so I bought it locally or, I would have purchased it from 7 Kids. Cathy |
Okay I still haven't taken the dive.
I am wondering if anyone has tried those little air compressors they use for nail art and cake decorating. They are under 50.00 and it looks like they would work with the Copic stuff. I saw several different models on ebay when I was browsing. |

Okay, I finally got my little Paasche compressor from Oozak last night. Got it all put together and tried it out. It's fantastic! Really easy to put together, the guy from Oozak even included a roll of plumbers tape! How great is that? Mine has a 10ft hose so I can leave the compressor on the floor and work with my airbrush at the table. I like that, because the vibrations from the compressor would make my table bounce all over the place! Mine has an auto shutoff like the Sparmax. So, when I release the trigger the compressor stops without me having to power it off and on all the time. Then it starts up again when I hit the trigger. Love that. It had a really smooth stream of air too. No blasts or interupptive spray. It feels like a really sturdy little unit. Plus, the customer service from Oozak was fantastic! Couldn't ask for better. Now, I've just got to get creating!

TBH once it got into decanting into other pots personally I bought the adapter. I just know I would tip one! |
Does anyone know about using the various mentioned airbrush systems with model airplane paints? My DH just last night said that he wanted to get a system for painting his model airplanes. I want to be able to use it myself with my reinkers and such. I haven't looked into all the specifics of any of them yet, but I thought I'd come here and ask those in-the-know here as to their experiences when I found this thread.
|
I'm planning on using my Harbor Freight one to paint some RC cars for my family, but haven't tried it yet.
|
Right. I just used my air compressor for the first time. Yeah, there is going to be a learning curve but my goodness that was easy. Just assemble it, read a page of directions and safety instructions, put a pen in and press the nozzle and play. WOW it was so simple I feel foolish for letting it sit there and intimidate me for so long. No big overspray.
Oh and the Harbor Freight compressor doesn't "run" constantly it cuts out at just above 60psi and cuts back in at around 40 psi giving plenty of time to make some good work. HTH |
I have seen the sparmax in person and it is very quiet, can anyone tell me if the Paasche is as quiet? I am intrigued by the lower price..... :)
