Right out of the box. I got it for Christmas and couldn't open it until my stamp room was clean so I would have a place to put it. Well, I cleaned tonight and once I had counter space I opened up the box. Well, the handle will not screw on. My DH looked at it and he said the threading is off. Needless to say, it went back into the box. And here I sit waiting to do an exchange tomorrow, if any of the Michael's stores around here have them.
I had that exact problem Christmas morning. I also posted here in General Stamping and was told it was happening to lots of people. I did exchange it, and the handle on the second one screwed in just fine. I hope this is the case for your exchange, cause I know how disappointing it was.

If you cannot exchange it call ProvoCraft and ask them to send you a new screw. It happened to me and to lots of new cuttlebug owners. PC is very willing to respond to your request.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I took the Cuttlebug back to Michael's today and they gave me a new one. And I made my first card with an embossing folder. If I knew how I would attach a picture. But I do LOVE it!!
