All of Stampin Up embossing folders used to be called Textured Impression Embossing Folders (TIEF) when they were made by Sizzix. The 3D ones were called Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing Folders.
Now that they are no longer made by Sizzix the names are just Embossing folder and 3D Embossing folder. There are still a few of the Sizzix brand in the catalog, so some are labeled with the old names.
Paula, the 3D embossing folders create a much deeper pattern than the regular folders. Also, when using them, you can't use the cutting plates as that will be too thick to go through the Big Shot. I still have the old platform, with the tabs, and I use Tab 1 with the blue embossing plate. My Big Shot is a bit loose, so I also use a shim of a piece of copy paper folded in half.
The 3 d's are thicker but work well giving you a much deeper texture to your embossing. If you follow the recommended sandwich you should have no problem with them.

You'll have to take careful note of which generation of Big Shot machine you have. SU changed that also, and I understand that the sandwiches are different.
There really isn't any difference between Big Shot machines, except as individual machines and that is minimal.
However, Stampin Up did change brands on the embossing folders and the 3D folders are different and require some adjustment to the sandwiches if you use them on any Big Shot.
Stampin Up should be coming out with a new machine soon...They said last year that it would just not be ready for the 2019-2020 catalog. New company for sure.
