I saw a tutorial on making a card with a star shape ( made from 2 square pieces, then small squares were placed on the large star overlapping to create a layer... does anyone know what this technique is called. I didn't make note of the tutorial and now I can't locate it.... :(

No, that's not it, the card base was an A2 the star was layered on the card.

It sounds like you are describing a pinwheel. It uses 2 pieces of cardstock cut to a size of 2-5/8" square and 8 1-1/4" squares. You place the two large squares on top of each other with one of them turn to look like a diamond and then add the small squares in each of the corners of the large squares. If you want, you can make the small squares two different colors and alternate them. You can even place a brad or other accent in the middle. I hope this helps.
