Stamping on tiles

I just purchased several tiles that I can use as coasters. I have not stamped on tiles before and know people use different techniques. Does Staz On work best? What do you use to seal your tiles? Can you use markers on the tiles? Do you use your embossing heat gun to set them or put them in the over, if so how long? Sorry for all the questions. I'm really excited about trying these. I want to make some as shower gifts. I would love to see any tiles you have done.

Sorry no one has responded to your questions about stamping on tiles. Here is a good tutorial to get you started.

I stamp with Stazon and color with Sharpies. I don't heatset or bake and they hold up really well. Moisture doesn't affect them once they are dry.

OK, so I have a question. I'm using the stazon ink. And I want to use the bear from the SU! Yukon set, but the ink runs, do I need to heat set it quickly after I stamp it?

According to the tutorial by GinaK, you do not need to heat set if you are using Stazon ink. I have stamped quite a few tiles with Stazon and my ink doesn't run.

Maybe you are using a tile that is ceramic, or glossy? That could cause the ink to stay on the surface and run. Or perhaps you are overinking? The tiles I've used are kind of rough and porous and absorb the ink.

I went ahead and stamped on a tile I had. It is a glossy tile. I used Staz On ink and then sprayed it with Krylon (sp?) gloss. I think the gloss may be flaking off. Has anyone else had this happen. I think I am going to stamp on the tile and not use the gloss spray and see what happens.

Here is a glossy tile I stamped with Stazon and did not spray with anything. I tested it, and it is waterproof and doesn't smear.

But I had a heck of a time stamping on the glossy surface. I have a very steady hand, but the tile is so slick the stamp would move slightly no matter how careful I was. The lines looked blurred. I wiped it off quickly with a baby wipe, and tried again.

And the Stazon ink didn't really want to adhere to the slick surface either. I had to "fill in" some missing lines with my black Sharpie pen.

I would think that you would want the non-sealed tile (tumbled) for coasters so that you don't have water standing on top of your coaster like you would with a glazed one.

I like the tumbled marble tiles. The only place I can find them in our area is at Lowes. They stamp beautifully.

I agree. Stamp with Stazon and then color with Sharpies or even chalks. No sealant.

For smooth tile, you can just use some Aleene's paper glaze over the stamped image to protect it. I've used Staz-on ink and paper glaze over the entire image.

I know the tiles are bought from Lowe's/Home Depot - is there a specific ceramic tile that works better? Thanks.

I don't think you use ceramic (glazed) I think it works best on un-glazed (tumbled marble) the best. If you used ceramic, the water will just pool on the top, with the tumbled marble the water will soak into the tile. Hope that correct!! Make sure you put bumpers or cork on the back side of your tile so you don't scratch your furniture!

For the back side of the tiles, here is a tip. If the colors work for you, get some sheets of Fun Foam. I found a multi-color pack at Dollar Tree and glued squares slightly smaller than the tiles to the back with thin lines of Mono Multi. They look really cute and do the job of cork. Much cheaper, too.

I use tumbled tiles I buy at Home Depot or Lowes..It is grand fun to use solid stamps...that way you don't have to worry about coloring anything in.
