Default shading on outside of paper question

hi all,
quick question for you... hopefully I can explain it correctly so you know what the heck I'm talking about.

I often see cards w/ some sort of shading on the outside edges of the paper.

Its almost like chalked or something all along the edges - but I've tried this and it doesn't even look like what is online here. Its not like an 'antique type thing' I dont think.. its just like a little bit of dark to light or even light to dark on about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of the paper.

If this even sounds remotely close to something you do... please help. I love the look - but must be doing something completely wrong or I'm just an idiot - I can't figure it out.

thanks as always for everyone's help.
Happy Stamping!!

I use a sponge and some ink form the ink pad just dab the sponge on the ink pad and hold the paper in your hand and then use the sponge to run sideways on the edge of the paper. I hope this helps. I also like to use scissors to scrap the edge of the paper to make it fray a little it softens the look.

Check out this thread from a couple of days ago for several perspectives on sponging the edges of your cardstock! ;)

I use a stippling brush and just stipple around my edges. HTH!

I like to ink my pages and cards directly with a pad or the spots work well for this.
