Question Primsacolor and Gamsol Challenged

Ok, I have the Gamsol and I have the Primsacolor thick lead pencils, and stumps. But my colors are not coming out very bright like the works I have seen in the Gallery. What can I be doing wrong?

I am using the SU White paper. Is that the paper I should be using, or is there something else that I should be using?

HELP!

I use the SU whisper white cardstock with my Gamsol and Prisma without any problems. Are you concentrating the color near the black lines of your image? When you use the Gamsol, blend the color in a circular motion with the stumps working towards the middle of the image. Does this make sense?

paynete I usually use one base color and one or two darker colors for shading. The paper you are using is fine.

Sue, no I wouldn't think you could use the watercolor crayons with that.

Thanks Tammi. I don't want to make a mistake and use them.

I was at a stamp show yesterday and the demonstrator was explaining that Gamasol will not work with watercolor crayons or watercolor pencils. She said Gamasol is a solvent so it works by melting the wax in regular pencils (and would probably work for crayons and oil pastels).

Try again with regular colored pencils.

Don't know about Gamsol, but I used odorless mineral spirit with watercolor pencils and the color moved just fine. Tried it with just colored pencil and not the same look. Also used stazon and no smearing. If you already have the watercolor pencils give it a try, what can you lose? Much success with your effort!

Make sure you're not oversaturating your stump with the odorless mineral spirits (Gamsol or any other brand you're using). I pour a bit of the OMS into an old medicine dosing cup, dip the stump in it, and then tap the tip of the stump onto a paper towel to remove any excess OMS before using it to work the color.

This is what I do - it works for me. Here is a sample I did with the Prisma pencils and I used mineral spirits.

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

And if you want to check out a MASTERS gallery of Gamsol and Prisma colors, just look here. Lana has got it down to a T!!!

LunarLana's Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

1.) Soak your stump - I'm not talking hours here - just enough for the liquid to go up the stump about a third of the way.
2.) While it is soaking, stamp your image using PERMANENT ink. SU basic black or Stazon. Make sure the ink is completely dry - even if you think it's dry, give it another minute or two.
3.) Pick out your pencil colors
4.) Put ONE mark on your paper with ONE color only, where you want it the darkest. You will blend off of that one line.
5.) Take your stump out, and blot it once or twice. It shouldn't be dry, but nothing dripping off of it either.
6.) Start pulling with your stump in a circular motion off the line of color you made. If you have blended it too much, make another line in the place of your original line, and go from there.

Blending takes patience. The card shown was one I sent to my Stamp Camps attendees. I sent each person one of them. By the last card I made, I felt more comfortable with the blending process and how much pencil I had to lay down in each area to get the look I was going for. There are so many variables when it comes to doing this, that these are not hard set rules. If it's a hot day, your pencils will run more smoothly, and it may not take as much pencil to paper. A lot also depends on how much liquid your stump has taken in. When you do it for a while, just like anything, you will get a feel for what you need/want. Good luck and we DO expect to see your creations in the gallery!!!;)

Sue I got mine at Hobby Lobby with a 40% coupon. I couldn't pay full price for something like that. KWIM

I feel like I'm challenged at this technique too. I can't get the rich color that the others are getting either.

Can someone explaine one thing to me? From what I'm reading I'm assuming that you are not supposed to color in the entire image, just basicall the outside and pull the color in - am I correct? If so, why are some of the sample so much more richly colored/brighter than others? I have to admit, I went out and bought the GAMSOL and a few prismacolor pencils to try out and I'm too unsure to even give it a go! I know, what a dope!
