Loretta, I feel the same way. The only way that I know is to use the eraser that comes with the pastels. Even when I do that though I'm not real happy with the results. Someone told me to only get the slightest amount of chalk on my dauber, but I guess that I just don't have the "right touch". I will be watching this thread to see if there are any other good tips.
If you really get a lot of chalk on the sponge dauber or cotton ball, and keep swirling it into the versamark, it will make it brighter. Then if you use the eraser, not much of the surrounding chalk will be left. Besides, it is just artful Candyland
This is the discussion I'm looking for today. I didn't think people had used erasers so I'm experimenting with just rubbing the "halo" with a facial tissue. It takes very nearly all of it off. Glad to know an eraser is "legal." I'll keep watching for other replies. Thx, ladies.
What I do works only if I apply the pastels using sponge daubers and by loading up the sponge dauber with chalk, then dabbing (without sliding it along the paper) repeatedly stright up and down until the versamark becomes the pastel color I want. Then, I have used a really soft, new, unused, dry, flat 5/8 watercolor brush to get the extras off. I very lightly stroke the brush across the image(s). Works pretty good for me. Leaves a very small amount of color that can easily be erased using that little eraser that comes with pastels. However, there are times that some of the image does get a wiped away, usually when my room is too humid or too cold.

I've had a set of chalks for years. It's not SU! and didn't come with an eraser; that's why I didn't know about the eraser. So many samples in SCS have shown me that I need SU!'s because it has many more colors.
I just bought some tiny pompoms for my alligator clip. I hope that helps me with accuracy and cuts down on "halo." Thanks for all your hints.
I use eye shadow applicators (cheap at WalMart). I apply the chalk starting at the center of the image working my way out. That way I don't have all the extra chalk on the outside of the image.

Plain old q-tips work great too. They are small (ou can make them s maller simply by pulling some of the cotton off) and that makes it easy to put the chalk right where you want it. If you don't have the eraser that came with the SU set, try one of the white plastic erasers or the grey kneaded art eraser they work great
